Wondai Races Caulfield Cup Meeting
The South Burnett Race Club will be holding its annual Wondai Races Caulfield Cup Meeting meeting at the Wondai race track in Baynes Street, Wondai from around 11:30am today. A highlight will be the running of the Roy & Glennis Radunz Wondai Cup, a leg of the Burnett To The Beach series. The theme of today's meeting is "Flowers And Fascinators" and guests are encouraged to dress to this theme to be in the running for great prizes in the Fashions Of The Field competition. As usual, the meeting will feature an on-course TAB; live telecasts of Brisbane and interstate races (along with interstate betting fluctuations); a vigorous undercover betting ring; a great BBQ and bar and a Punters Podium. The always popular Lady Luck Cocktail Bar will be in full swing, too, along with the track's canteen. Today's meeting will feature a full card of five races and entry to the track is $10. Farm Household Allowance Info Session - Kingaroy
An information session to encourage local farming families to find out more about the FHA will be held this morning from 10:00am to noon at the Centrelink office at 21 Markwell Street, Kingaroy. Centrelink staff will explain who is eligible for a fortnightly Farm Household Allowance payment, how to create a myGov account and claim online, what documents are needed and what support is available. Farmers need to bring along three original identification documents (eg. a driver’s licence, firearms licence, birth certificate or passport) as well as documents detailing their assets, property and income.
Waterhole Rocks - Nanango
The third day of the four-day Waterhole Rocks rock 'n' roll campout weekend at Nanango Showgrounds will kick off at 9:00am today with dance lessons with Beris and John. At 10:00am, Billy Guy will take to the stage, followed at 11:30am by the South Burnett's own Elvis, Jeff Hancox. At 1:00pm, Little Stevie and Tail Fins rock the room until 5:00pm. This will be followed by a fashion competition at 5:00pm, Jeff Hancox at 6:00pm and A Band Called Twang from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. The festival is devoted to all things associated with 1950s and 1960s rock'n'roll. This includes hot rods, custom cars, vintage caravans, driving games and dance lessons, all backed up by rock'n'roll acts. This year's event is marking the 40th anniversary of the death of Aussie rock'n'roll icon Johnny O'Keefe. A bar and canteen will be operating. Entry to the festival is $20 today (or you can buy a weekend pass for $40). Powered and unpowered campsites are available at the Showgrounds for a nominal amount per night if you want to camp out. Everyone is welcome and the Festival will rock on right through until Sunday afternoon. Beauty And The Beast - Kingaroy
South Burnett Musical Comedy Society's massive production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast will be on again from 7:00pm tonight at the Kingaroy Performing Arts Centre at Kingaroy State High School. There’s just one more show in Kingaroy: October 21 (2:00pm). Oktoberfest - Nanango
Nanango RSL Club will be holding their inaugural Oktoberfest celebration at the club from noon to 3:00pm today. This is Stop 2 in Nanango's Saturday Night Live promotion, which also included Waterhole Rocks and Rock On Palace (see separate entries) which is raising funds for the Butter Factory Park Inclusive Playground. Lunch ($55 per head - tickets include a stein and a complimentary drink to fill it) will consist of twin share plates of pork knuckle, semmelknodel, zwiebelkuchen, sauerkraut, pretzels and other traditional German foods. Dinner will also be available ($20 per head with stein). There will be prizes for the best male and female costumes (dust off your lederhosen ...) Lunch tickets can be online or phone (07) 4163-1375.
Kingaroy Markets
The third Saturday of the month Kingaroy Markets will be held at the Cheers Triangle end of the Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman Street, Kingaroy from 7:00am to around 12:00pm today. The markets are jointly run by the Kingaroy Rotary Club and Kingaroy Show Society and feature a great array of arts, crafts, fruit and flower stalls. New stallholders are always very welcome! Rock On Palace - Nanango
Brisbane band Black Smoke will be playing live from 7:00pm to late at the Palace Hotel in Nanango tonight as Stop 3 in Nanango's Saturday Night Live weekend! The "Saturday Night Live" promotion, which also includes Waterhole Rocks and Oktoberfest, is raising finds for the Butter Factory Park Inclusive Playground. More information? Click here
Taabinga Trivia Night - Kingaroy
Taabinga State School P&C will be holding a Trivia Night with "a splash of red" dress-up theme at the school's sports hall in Rae Street, Kingaroy from 6:00pm until late tonight as a fundraiser. There'll be a licensed bar running along with food platters available for purchase, plus raffles, games and prizes to be won. The night will offer six games of 10 questions, and play will take place with tables of eight or less. A child-minding service will also be available from 5:45pm to 10:00pm, but you'll need to make a booking to 0428-636-419 to use it. Admission to the Trivia Night is just $10 and since there's no EFTPOS available, you'll also need to bring cash for food and drinks (ie no BYO). Barambah Shed Men - Moffatdale
The Barambah Shed Men will be holding their 41st meeting at Hidden Gold Homestead (formerly Bridgeman Downs Wines) in Waterview Drive, Moffatdale from 4:00pm onwards this afternoon. Today's meeting will feature two very interesting guest speakers: Clinton Kenyon, a farrier and blacksmith, who will shoe a horse and discuss his plans for the homestead; and Peter Allan, who worked at Mt Isa Mines, then joined the army, then acted as a driving school instructor before becoming a registered nurse and going on to serve at many different hospitals. The cost of the meeting is $15 (which includes a meal, dessert, soft drinks, and tea/coffee), but young blokes under 15 can attend for free. To assist with planning the catering, though, an RSVP by Monday, October 15 would be greatly appreciated. Model Aero Fly-In - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Aeromodellers Society will be holding the first day of a two-day Model Aero Fly-In at the KAMS flying field at 844 Booie-Crawford Road, Booie from 8:30am until this evening. KAMS members fly model aeroplanes of all types, and this weekend's get-together will be drawing fellow modellers from all over south-east Queensland. It's also a great opportunity for locals to come try the sport as well. Admission is free, and there'll be a sausage sizzle and soft drinks on sale if you get peckish. More details? The Wondai parkrun group will be holding their weekly 5km timed run at Coronation Park in Wondai at 7:00am this morning. Runners follow a course along the South Burnett Rail Trail and the parkrun group is free to join. Popular South Burnett band Mr Q will be performing at Kingaroy's Commercial Hotel at the corner of Glendon and Haly Streets from 8:30pm until around 12:30am tonight.
