Vietnam Veterans Day
Today is Vietnam Veterans Day, which is also known as Long Tan Day in memory of the 18 Australians killed at the battle of Long Tan on August 18, 1966. Vietnam Veterans Day has come to symbolise our nation's collective memory of the Vietnam War and in the South Burnett, special services are conducted every year to mark it. In Blackbutt, the presidents and members of the Blackbutt and Yarraman RSL Sub-Branches will be holding a combined service to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan at the Blackbutt RSL in Muir Street at 11:00am sharp, followed by refreshments catered by the Blackbutt-Yarraman QCWA; in Nanango, the Nanango RSL Sub-Branch will be holding a finger food morning tea and official presentation at the RSL in George Street at 11:00am; in Kingaroy, the South Burnett branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association and the Kingaroy RSL Sub-Branch will be holding a joint commemoration service in the Kingaroy RSL carpark at 10:30am with guest speaker Mrs Judith Dixon, the sister of Long Tan veteran Barry Magnussen who was awarded the Medal of Gallantry for his part in the Battle of Long Tan. This service is not only for veterans - everyone is welcome to attend. More details? Phone Barry on 0481-121-637; and in Wondai, the Wondai RSL Sub-Branch will be holding a ceremony at the Wondai cenotaph at the corner of Scott and Mackenzie Streets at 4:00pm. You can also find out more about the Vietnam Veterans Association - which looks after the needs of Vietnam vets and helps promote VV Day - on their web site.
