ABC Radio is launching a new weekday current affairs program aimed at rural and regional listeners.

Australia Wide – not to be confused with the ABC TV program of the same name axed last May after presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied sparked a social media storm – hopes to give country listeners a greater say in national conversations.

It will begin on Monday night.

The 25-minute program will run on ABC Southern Queensland (612 AM) – and other regional stations – at 6:05pm immediately following the Drive show, and will be repeated on Radio National and Radio Australia at 7:35pm.Reports will be sourced from the ABC’s regional radio network and its national rural and regional reporting team.

ABC Regional Director Fiona Reynolds said the conversational-style program would be a significant addition to the news and current affairs line-up on the ABC’s regional network, providing a round-up of the day’s leading stories as well as breaking news.

“We’ve put a great team behind the program, headed by WA-based presenter Sinéad Mangan and senior producer Bridget Fitzgerald,” she said.

Queensland Country Hour will still be heard between noon and 1:00pm.
