The inaugural winner of a bursary sponsored by the Barambah branch of the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network (QRRRWN) was announced in Murgon on Wednesday night.
The $1000 bursary, which will be administered by the Red Earth Community Foundation, is open to women aged over 30 who live in the South Burnett and who are seeking help to gain new skills via training or personal development.
QRRRWN State President Melissa Barnett and Red Earth Board member Karen Seiler presented the cheque to Carissa Beddows, from Windera, who will use it to complete her nursing training.
The cheque presentation was one of the highlights of Red Earth’s annual general meeting held at the Royal Hotel.
Also announced were the successful applicants for the 2018 South Burnett Community Leadership Program.
This residential program, run across two weekends at the Bunya Mountains, aims to develop leadership skills and allows the participants to develop insight and learn practical ways to navigate everyday situations at work or at home.
It is facilitated by Pamela McAllister, who previously presented the very popular Building Rural Leaders Program in Queensland.
Graduates of the Leadership Program become Red Earth alumni and are invited to attend various social occasions and post-course training sessions to build personal and professional networks in the Burnett.
This will be the fifth time the Leadership Program has been run. For the first time this year, applicants were invited from the North Burnett as well as the South Burnett.
Previous graduates of the program – including Kirstie Schumacher, Kathy Cope, Carl Rackemann and Kristy Frahm – shared their experiences of the program at the AGM.
