Stepping Black – the Hervey Bay-based organisation that has been heavily involved in the organisation of several major Cherbourg events – has received a State Government grant of $49,800.

The grant has come from a scheme designed to encourage community-based groups to develop and promote mental health support networks in regions affected by natural disasters.

Health Minister Cameron Dick said the fund received applications from organisations keen to improve the mental health and well-being of Queensland communities.

Stepping Black vice-chair Zona Hussey-Smith said the organisation looked forward to using the grant funds to help their project create positive health messages for Indigenous students, their peers, their families and communities.

“The grant will see students empowered to make informed decisions and arm them with the skills, knowledge and techniques for dealing with adversity, strengthening their resilience and sense of belonging,” Ms Hussey-Smith said.
