South Burnett producers have scooped the carcass awards in the prestigious RNA Paddock To Palate Competition at this year’s Brisbane Ekka.

Kumbia couple Rick and Alice Greenup won the Champion Carcass ribbon in the 70-Day Trade competition, while Janene and Scott McLellan, from Boondooma, took home the Champion Carcass ribbon in the 100-Day Export competition.

The Greenups entered pens of Santa Gertrudis steers from their Eidsvold Station property.

They earned 3rd place overall in their section of the competition, earning a prize cheque for $1500.

The McLellans, who entered pens of Charolais X, took out a third spot in the 100-Day Pen of Six Carcass class.

The Paddock To Palate Competition, which this year had a total of $46,000 in prize money, is competed over three phases:

  • Best aggregate weight gain over 100 days (70 days for trade) – all the cattle are placed in the same Dalby feedlot. The competition rewards the best aggregate weight gain for a pen of six steers.
  • Carcass competition for the best aggregate pen, and
  • A Meat Standards Australia eating quality competition.

The exhibitor who gets the highest aggregate score across the three categories wins the overall prize.

The competition has been running for 20 years. This year it added a 330-Day Wagyu Challenge – with $10,000 prize money – to the 100-Day Export and 70-Day Trade classes.

Overall Paddock To Palate 2017 winners were:

  • 70-Day Trade – Rob and Kelly Lamoureux, from Armidale, with Santa/Angus/Black Simmental X
  • 100-Day Export – Ken and Kerry McKenzie, from Blackwater, with Droughtmaster X
  • 330-Day Wagyu Challenge – Alan Hoey, Allora
