Urban and rural fire brigades were scrambled on Friday afternoon after a small fire on a Blackbutt North property was whipped up by the wind and took off quickly through surrounding grass.

The incident occurred in Enid Court, which runs off Crumpton Drive just north of Blackbutt, in a rural residential area surrounded by bushland.

Rural fire brigade volunteers from the Taromeo, East Nanango and South Nanango brigades attended the blaze as well as urban firefighters from Blackbutt.

The blaze gutted a small light commercial van parked on the property, and also badly damaged a shipping container being used to store goods.

No one was injured during the incident.

Firefighters monitored the area overnight to make sure the area remained safe.

On Saturday afternoon, heavy smoke from a bushfire burning south of Cooyar briefly closed the New England Highway.

Queensland Police reported that the highway was closed near Bum Bum Creek at Coal Bank.

With a long fire season predicted, rural fire brigades in the South Burnett are eager to have more volunteers join their ranks.

Members of rural brigades receive training and skills that can assist them in all areas of their lives.
