July 9, 2017

The long trip to Goondiwindi proved too much for the South Burnett Saints AFL team at the weekend, with the Hawks busting their visitors’ winning streak.

The Saints were aiming for their seventh win a row but the Hawks, who are sitting in two places behind the South Burnett on the ladder, brought them back down to earth.

The last time the two teams met was in Round 5 when the Saints, playing before a home crowd, downed Goondiwindi by more than 100 points.

This time around, the margins were closer but Goondiwindi were still ahead at the end of each quarter.

The half-time score was Goondiwindi 9-8 (62) to South Burnett 3-1 (19).

The Saints enjoyed a stronger third quarter, holding the Hawks to three goals and kicking three themselves.

The final score was 18-13 (121) to 8-6 (54).

South Burnett goal kickers were Jordan Pressnell (4), Mitchell Francis (2), Joseph Amery and Adam Bowater.

Despite the loss, the Saints are still holding down third spot on the points table.

The Saints’ next game will be against second placegetters Coolaroo next Saturday at Kratzke Oval at Highfields.
