Relay For Life patron Carl Rackemann, the major force behind the annual fundraiser, with one of the limited edition purple cricket balls made especially for South Burnett Relay For Life … eight balls will be auctioned on Saturday night

July 21, 2017

Sports fans are getting ready for another big night of fun, food and fundraising in Kingaroy on Saturday … the annual Relay For Life “Dinner With The Captains”.

Last year’s dinner at the Kingaroy Town Hall raised an incredible $51,871.24, so organisers are eager to do as well, or even better.

South Burnett Relay For Life patron Carl Rackemann said there were some great items listed in the auctions, including two tickets to next year’s already sold out Ed Sheeran concert at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

There is also rugby league, cricket and softball memorabilia, including Joyce Lester’s Olympic tracksuit top.

In the silent auction, there is more very collectable sporting memorabilia as well as two tickets to Paul McCartney’s December concert in Brisbane.

A full list of all the auction items is below …

The three guest speakers for this year’s dinner are:

  • Joyce Lester, OAM – Joyce was selected for the Australian Softball team in 1977 and became captain in 1985, a role she held until after the team’s medal-winning effort at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. She has played professionally in Japan and also coached in both Australia and Japan. She has been inducted into the World Softball Hall Of Fame.
  • Greg Ritchie –  “Fat Cat”, as he is known, played in 30 Tests and 44 ODIs from 1982 to 1987, as well as playing for Queensland between 1980 and 1992.  He scored 10,170 runs in his first class career, including 24 centuries and 54 fifties. Ritchie was a fixture in Australia’s middle order between 1985 and 1987 which included the 1985 Ashes tour to England where he scored his highest score (146) at Nottingham.
  • Andrew Slack – The third captain is a rugby union great who also has a special connection to cancer, after losing his young son to the disease. Andrew retired last year after a career as a TV sports commentator, but before that he played 87 games for Australia, including 39 as captain. Between 1975 and 1987 he represented Queensland on 133 occasions, setting a record that stood for almost 20 years.
