A 21-year-old Central Queensland man suffered serious injuries when his 4WD left the road and crashed into a large tree beside the D’Aguilar Highway at Gilla, near Blackbutt, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police are unsure about what time the crash occurred but believe it was between 2:00am and 3:00am.

The driver of the LandCruiser trayback, which was travelling towards Blackbutt, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Officer-in-Charge of Yarraman Police, Sergeant Sean Relf,  said the man was taken by ambulance to Nanango Hospital and then airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

He travelled in a serious but stable condition.

Emergency services from Yarraman and Blackbutt attended the crash scene.

Sgt Relf said the Police Forensic Crash Unit would be investigating.

“Police will be investigating when the crash occurred and what the circumstances were leading up to it,” he said.

UPDATE 3:00pm:  It is believed the driver could have been trapped in his vehicle for up to five hours.

An RACQ LifeFlight spokesperson said the vehicle may have gone down the embankment beside the highway about midnight.

QFES and QAS  paramedics were first on the scene, working to free the man from the wreckage before taking him by road ambulance to Nanango Hospital.

LifeFlight’s Toowoomba-based Surat Gas Aero-Medical Service helicopter was despatched about 6:50am to airlift the man.

The man was treated for multi-trauma injuries and flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in a serious but stable condition.
