Work has begun on a $7 million project to upgrade the New England Highway near Cooyar.

Passing lanes will be built 6.5km and 2.5km south of Cooyar, and the major Oakey-Cooyar Road T-intersection at Wutul will be upgraded.

Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said on Tuesday the 1.3km long northbound and southbound passing lanes would improve traffic flow and safety.

The works will be undertaken by RoadTek and will include the extension or replacement of existing drains and alterations to private entrances affected by the overtaking lanes.

“We ask motorists to be patient while these important works are taking place,” Mr Bailey said.

“Reduced speed limits, directional signage and traffic control will be in place during the works to guide drivers along the highway.

“Motorists should obey directional signage and take care while travelling through the area.”

Construction is expected to be completed by February 2018, weather permitting.
