Memerambi got its first public park on Friday with the opening of a new covered picnic table and toilet facilities in the grounds of the former Memerambi railway station

More than 108 years after it was settled by Europeans, Memerambi finally got its first public park last week.

A pedestrian access bridge, covered picnic table and toilet have been opened in the grounds of the former Memerambi railway station, between the village’s iconic Stop Shop and the South Burnett Rail Trail.

The new facilities are the result of a combined effort by the Wooroolin Lions, the now-defunct Memerambi Hall Association and the South Burnett Regional Council, and were opened for public use last Friday afternoon.

While the picnic table and toilet are primarily intended for passing rail trail users, Memerambi residents also stand to benefit.

The area had formerly been sealed off from public use since the closure of the railway line in 2011.

Cr Ros Heit said she was very happy to see the project finally open.

The access bridge, picnic shelter and toilet had been built several months ago, but the South Burnett Regional Council needed to wait for Ergon to connect power to the site before they could open it to the public.

Cr Heit paid special tribute to Russell Dower from the Wooroolin Lions Club for conceiving the project, and the former Memerambi Hall Association for contributing their remaining funds towards it.

She hoped some landscaping and trees could be added to the park in future, along with a sign showing the location of the former Memerambi railway station.
