Cherbourg’s defence proved a tough task for the Nanango Stags

May 12, 2017

A second-half revival wasn’t enough for Nanango to chalk up their first 2017 rugby league competition points last weekend.

The game, against the Hornets at Cherbourg, was almost a replay of last year’s Grand Final, with almost identical scores at half-time and a second-half comeback by the Stags.

At half-time, Cherbourg led 24-4 but the Stags were lucky the margin wasn’t greater after the Hornets bombed at least two tries through loose handling close to the line.

Cherbourg started the second half strongly, with Keith Gadd Jnr scoring back-to-back tries in three minutes. Gadd finished with four tries for the match.

Nanango hit back quickly, with Drew Jackson forcing his way over the line and Ashley Smallwood converting.

Cherbourg was ahead 38-10 with 11 minutes to go, but the flow of the match suddenly turned in Nanango’s favour.

Nanango put on three tries in eight minutes, with the last being converted after the siren.

The final score was Cherbourg 38, Nanango 26 – a huge improvement in fortunes for the Stags after their 68-20 drubbing by the Hornets last time around.

Cherbourg tries were scored by Keith Gadd Jnr (4), William Munroe, Errol Simpson and Fred Cobbo. Goals were kicked by Bernard Hopkins (3), Daniel Weazel and Lewis Hopkins.

Nanango tries were scored by Chris Clark, Drew Jackson, Ashley Smallwood, Blake Harvey and Clinton Harvey. Goals were kicked by Ashley Smallwood (3).

In women’s rugby league, the South Burnett girls would not have enjoyed their trip to Hervey Bay last Friday night.

The Under 14s were defeated 52-12 by Hervey Bay.

Under 16s were also on the wrong side of the ledger to Hervey Bay, down 28-0.

The Under 18s were happier … they had a week off.

The second half of the split Round 3 was to be played on Friday night (May 12) which means no South Burnett women’s teams will see action this week.

Pittsworth’s defence was having trouble stopping South Burnett’s hard-running attack

The Pittsworth Danes were overwhelmed by the South Burnett Eagles in their U18s match played at Cherbourg on Saturday.

South Burnett, who notched up 13 tries, won 72-0 in a game the Danes probably thought would never end.

South Burnett tries were scored by Errol Simpson (4), Jackson Mladenovic (2), Elwyn Fewquandie, Thomas Springate, Maurice Fisher, Orlyn Fisher, Izaak Cusworth, James Christensen and George Fisher. Elwyn Fewquandie (8) and Thomas Springate (2) were the goal kickers.
