Joan Murray and Marion Izatt, from Proston, caught up at the meet’n’greet

Proston’s recently formed Community Round Table joined with the Proston Men’s Shed to host a free meet’n’greet for local residents and visitors on Easter Saturday.

The morning tea, held at the old Proston Railway Station building, also provided an opportunity for the official launch of the town’s new overnight camping area.

The free camping area is a project of the Proston Round Table and was developed on a vacant, Council-owned block of land adjacent to Railway Park.

South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff, who cut a ribbon to mark the opening, said the signs pointing to the camping area had barely been erected during the week when the first campervan, carrying visitors from Bundaberg, pulled into the camping area for a stay.

The Round Table group hopes to entice some of the thousands of tourists who regularly head to Boondooma Dam throughout the year to make the short detour to Proston to stay and stock up locally.

As if to prove the concept, on Saturday a group of visitors from Tin Can Bay and the Mackay region spotted the roadside signs advertising the morning tea and dropped in to the railway building to enjoy a cuppa.

They were presented with free visitor bags which included a map, information about upcoming events and the region’s dams, along with offers from local stores.
