South Burnett Women – the not-for-profit group behind the $5000 Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship – held another successful fundraising event in Kingaroy on Thursday night.

Members and friends gathered at the Kingaroy Art Gallery to enjoy canapes and wine, and browse the current exhibition by Jumping Ant Arts.

Guest speaker for the “Night At The Gallery” was South Burnett CTC CEO Nina Temperton.

This is the first time South Burnett Women have organised a function at the gallery, but president Caroline Cavanagh said she had been looking for an opportunity to use the beautiful space.

All funds raised on the night – except for a small donation to the gallery – will go towards South Burnett Women’s fundraising for its next scholarship recipient.

The Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship  is a bursary to assist a young South Burnett woman with tertiary study.

The inaugural recipient was announced last month on International Women’s Day.

The other aim of the group is to encourage and inspire South Burnett women.

To encourage networking amongst those present, a “game” involving $1 coins and swapping items encouraged the women gathered at the gallery to chat to people they didn’t know.

“We aim to connect, empower and help women grow in our local community,” Caroline said.
