Coolaroo, the team that knocked the South Burnett Saints out of the 2016 Darling Downs AFL competition, proved too much of a handful in the season opener played in Toowoomba on Saturday.

South Burnett started slowly, trailing by 23 points at the first change.

At half-time, the Saints were still behind, 47-12.

The visitors lifted in the third quarter, putting more points on the board than Coolaroo and narrowing the margin.

But the Saints – down a player through injury – allowed Coolaroo to hop away in the last quarter with the Roos putting on five goals to one.

The final score was 13.14 (92) to 4.8 (32).

Goals were kicked by Ben Pressnell (2), Joseph Amery and Brad Edwards.

Adam Green and Carl Stevenson did the damage for Coolaroo, kicking five goals apiece.

The Saints’ next game will be against University Cougars, which will be played at the USQ Oval in Toowoomba on Saturday.

Dalby Swans also flew away with the points in the game against the Saints Women, played at Dalby on Saturday.

The teams were locked at the end of the first quarter, but the Swans broke free in the second and third stanzas, putting on goals while keeping the Saints away from the points.

In the last quarter, the Saints picked up again to score a consolation goal.

The final score was 8.9 (57) to 2.0 (12).

Saints’ goals were kicked by Natalie Fenton and Amanda Clifford.

The next game for the women will be against Lockyer-Warwick at Warwick on Saturday.
