What do you do when you find out you’re managing one of Queensland’s top 10 tourist parks? Park manager Corey Goldie thinks a spot of fishing is usually a good answer (Photo: Yallakool)

Yallakool Tourist Park on Bjelke-Petersen Dam has been rated as one of the top 10 caravan/tourist parks in the state.

On Wednesday, Yallakool manager Corey Goldie was advised by Star Ratings Australia the park had made its 2017 Gold List for Queensland.

The award is particularly important because Star Ratings Australia is endorsed by all of Australia’s peak motoring groups, and their members use the site to find the best places to stay around the nation.

Star Ratings Australia uses proprietary software and sophisticated algorithms to independently search online travel agents, review sites and social media platforms for guest reviews.

It then generates a Travellers Rating for individual properties – a score out of 10 that reflects the quality of each property’s accommodation experience according to past guests.

Star Ratings’ system aggregates consumer ratings and reviews from more than 100 websites including Booking.com, Wotif, Expedia, Agoda, Hotels.com, Facebook, Orbitz, Google and Ratestogo to find out the best – and worst – places to stay in Australia.

A quirky Facebook post showing kangaroos resting in the shade and emus taking a swim at Lake Boondooma has now been seen by more than 70,000 people (Photo: Lake Boondooma)

The Star Ratings award is the second win the region’s dams have had in the past few weeks.

Late last month, Lake Boondooma Caravan Park posted a quirky pair of mobile photos on Facebook showing emus swimming in the lake while a pair of kangaroos enjoyed the shade of a shelter nearby.

The Facebook post was picked up by WIN News in Toowoomba and soon went viral.

Corey told southburnet.com.au that as of Tuesday, the amusing post has now been seen more than 70,000 times, helping bring the park to the attention of potentially thousands of people who might never have known it existed.

And the timing couldn’t have been better.

This weekend Lake Boondooma will be kept busy hosting the Boondooma Dam Fish Stocking Association’s 29th annual Yellowbelly Fishing Competition.

The competition will see hundreds of fishermen and their families descend on the lake for a weekend of fishing and family fun … and maybe this year some who’ve never been before, thanks to the local wildlife.
