The heatwave that hit Queensland at the weekend set record high temperatures in a number of towns, including Kingaroy (Map: BOM)

Kingaroy recorded its two hottest February days on record at the weekend … and it’s likely other South Burnett towns did the same.

Temperatures in Kingaroy hit a peak of 39.7C (103.4F) on Saturday, and climbed to a new high of 40.3C (104.5F) at 3:10pm on Sunday before peaking at 41.6C (106.9F).

Both days broke the previous February record of 37.8C (100.04F), which was set on February 22, 2004.

Records were also broken in Toowoomba, Dalby, Gatton, St George, Roma, Beaudesert and Applethorpe, some stretching as far back as 50 years.

But if the South Burnett sweltered through the weekend heatwave, there were worse places to be in Queensland.

On Sunday, the mercury hit 41.8C at 1:00pm at Amberley, 41.9C at Dalby, 43.4C at Gatton and 45.6C at St George.

Birdsville was predicted to hit 47C (116.6F).

But there is relief in sight.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a south-easterly change that should see temperatures across the South Burnett drop three to four degrees by Monday, and as much as nine degrees by Tuesday.
