A man aged in his 20s was airlifted to hospital on Friday afternoon after being cut free from his wrecked car near Cooyar.

Police said the driver suffered facial lacerations in the crash which happened about 11:00am on the New England Highway, two kilometres south of the Oakey turn-off.

The vehicle left the road and rolled several times down an embankment.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

The highway was closed while emergency crews to worked to free the driver and to allow the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter to land nearby.

The driver was transported to the Toowoomba Base Hospital in a stable condition.
