Urban and rural firefighters were called to the fire at Nanango waste transfer station

UPDATE 3:45pm: The fire has been extinguished and there no longer is smoke affecting the area.

Earlier:

Multiple fire crews are attending a large rubbish fire burning in the vicinity of Finlay Road, Nanango (behind the Lee Park racecourse).

The fire is believed to be burning in or near the Nanango Waste Transfer facility.

At 2:50pm, a QFES spokesman said firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze which broke out earlier this afternoon.

A thick smoke haze is affecting the Nanango area as a result of the fire.

Residents have been advised to close windows and doors and, if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep medications close by.

Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions.
