A fire that broke out at an Ergon Energy substation in Kilkivan on Thursday afternoon is still burning, but has not affected the electricity supply to nearby residents.

An Ergon Energy spokesman said the fire was in a voltage transformer inside the bulk supply substation, one of two substations located in Kilkivan.

The fire has affected one of the two lines coming into the substation.

The other feed has not been affected, enabling supply to be maintained to zone substations and from there to Ergon Energy customers.

The fire was allowed to burn overnight with fire crews on standby to ensure it did not escape the substation complex.

Ergon workers are also at the site to determine the best course of action.
