Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson

Former APN CEO Mark Jamieson has been elected president of the Local Government Association of Queensland at the association’s Annual Conference this week.

The Sunshine Coast mayor was first elected to local government in 2012.

For the top job at the LGAQ – the umbrella body that represents all Queensland councils – he faced off against former Western Downs mayor Ray Brown.

Mayor Jamieson replaces acting president Cr Jenny Hill.

Cr Jamieson said he would seek to “improve productivity and financial sustainability in councils, help the sector gain access to innovative new markets and connect to the digital economy, and foster stronger indigenous communities”.

“Importantly, what I offer the LGAQ is a fiercely independent president, with no political party allegiances and the fact that I have demonstrated the ability to work across the political divide and with whoever may be in power,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“This is crucial for local government given the volatility that has become a feature of the Federal and State political landscape.”
