Newly elected South Burnett MPs Llew O’Brien (Wide Bay) and David Littleproud (Maranoa) spoke of family, pride in the region and the honour of being elected in their maiden speeches to Federal Parliament this week.

In an emotional personal speech, former police officer Mr O’Brien spoke about his mother’s death when he was a teenager, and his early struggles to find a job and to put food on the table.

Mr O’Brien also touched on some of the key issues in his electorate: roads, aged care, unemployment and a $20 million package aimed at stimulating jobs in the Wide Bay Burnett.

He also urged big business, especially Woolworths and Coles, to “play fair” when dealing with primary producers.

And there was some free publicity for local events, including the Kilkivan Great Horse Ride, the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, and the Murgon to Cherbourg Reconciliation Fun Run.

Mr O’Brien also emphasised the need to remove the stigma around mental illness so more people would seek help.

He spoke bravely about his diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, possibly linked to some of the sights, sounds and smells he had experienced as a police officer.

He thanked his “political mentor”, former Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss, who watched the speech from the public galley, and his “adopted dad”, retired Police Assistant Commissioner Laurie Pointing.

Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said he was proud he was the third generation of his family to be elected to public office: his grandfather George had been Deputy Mayor at Chinchilla Shire Council, and his father Brian had served as Education and Environment Ministers in the Queensland Parliament.

Mr Littleproud paid tribute to the dedication of his predecessor, Bruce Scott, who served the 730,000 sq km electorate as MP for 26 years.

He also praised the people of his electorate who have battled drought for so long without giving up.

Mr Littleproud said the trade deals negotiated by the Federal Coalition had given primary producers in Maranoa hope for the future.

A key issue for the electorate was “connectivity” … in transport, NBN access and mobile phone coverage.

He stressed the importance of developing telehealth services which will cut costs for remote patients.

Other topics covered included dog fences, Wellcamp Airport, the Second Range Crossing at Toowoomba and a proposal to pipe recycled water from Brisbane to the Darling Downs.
