August 30, 2016

Plenty of sunshine – and a cool breeze – greeted visitors to the 99th Wondai Show held at the Wondai Showgrounds on Saturday.

Cattle entries were strong, with 120 head entered in the stud competition, 30 led steers and 29 dairy cattle.

The always popular chainsaw and post-ripping competitions attracted a good crowd of onlookers, while others enjoyed browsing the (much quieter) pavilion entries.

The show was officially opened by Deputy Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington, who along with local Member for Callide Jeff Seeney, took time off from the LNP State Conference in Brisbane to attend.

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the presentation of Life Membership badges of the Wondai AP&I Society (the show society) to current president Dennis Morris, and Wondai Races stalwarts Glenys and Roy Radunz.

The evening was topped off by the Grand Finals of the South Burnett Karaoke Sing Off.

After weeks of heats organised by Sue Bradley and Geoff Grevell, a total of 25 acts competed for prizes and entertained the crowd.

Winners were:

  • Children (8-15 yrs): 1st Mackenzie Grundy; 2nd Tahlia Goschnick; 3rd Noelana Rossow
  • Female: 1st Rachel Andersen; 2nd Anita Williams
  • Male: 1st Michael Thackray; 2nd Keith Edwards
  • Duet: 1st Jenny Ball & Keith Edwards; 2nd Helen Bush & Lyn Rodgers

Planning has already begun for next year’s Centenary Wondai Show.

Organisers are looking for anecdotes, photos, newspaper clippings etc for a Centenary Book which will be prepared for the occasion.
