Heading over to Toowoomba? Then watch your speed when you’re travelling through intersections or you may get a nasty shock in the mail.

The Queensland Police Service, in conjunction with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, has upgraded a number of existing red light camera sites in the Toowoomba area to improve road safety.

The red light cameras – used to snap photos of vehicles going through red lights – are now also operating as speed cameras.

The cameras will be monitoring vehicle speeds at all times, not just when the traffic light signal is red.

The following intersections have red light cameras only:

  •  James St, Rangeville, at the intersection with Kitchener Street
  •  Tor St, Newtown, at the intersection with Hursley Road

The following intersections are operating with combined red light / speed camera systems:

  • James St, South Toowoomba, at the intersection with Neil Street
  • James St, South Toowoomba, at the intersection with Pechey Street
  • James St, Rangeville, at the intersection with MacKenzie Street

The cameras located at the following intersections are operating as red light cameras at the moment but will be upgraded to speed cameras soon:

  • Bridge St, Newtown, Toowoomba, at the intersection with Holberton Street
  • Bridge St, Wilsonton, at the intersection with McDougall Street

“The aim of these cameras is to deter drivers from speeding or disobeying red light signals as the consequences of this risky behaviour is known to contribute to road crashes,” Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said.

“Speeding and disobeying signals is illegal and dangerous. It is everyone’s responsibility to drive safely.”

  1. The rea$on$ authoritie$ $eek to u$e $peed camera$ are obviou$ to mo$t ob$erver$, and tho$e rea$on$ do NOT include $afety. Speed cameras are government run rackets that produce profits ONLY when the posted limits are set well below the safest 85th percentile speed points that minimize crashes.
