Kingaroy State High School walked away the winners of this year’s South Burnett High School Art Competition when the results were announced on Friday night.
For the first time since the competition began, the Wondai Regional Art Gallery attracted entries from all four South Burnett senior high schools.
In honour of the occasion, the Gallery introduced a new Perpetual Trophy for the event which was awarded to the high school whose students did best overall.
Kingaroy State High School students pocketed three high commendations and took out nine of the major prizes on the night to become the first holders of the trophy.
Gallery curator Elaine Madill told the capacity crowd the main aim of the competition was to stimulate the next generation of the South Burnett’s arts community.
“You are the people who will take over our galleries and produce our art when we are gone,” Elaine told the students who had come to the opening night.
“Without you we are nothing. You are the future of art in our region.”
She paid tribute to all the region’s high school art teachers and to all the students in attendance for the high quality of their work.
Elaine also paid special tribute to Gallery patron Brian Tucker, who provided $1500 in prize monies for this year’s competition winners.
Brian has been a long-time supporter of the Gallery and was amongst the first to volunteer when Elaine announced she was starting fund-raising for this year’s event.
Elaine also thanked Gayndah art teacher Sue Capell, who judged this year’s entries, and Cr Ros Heit, who announces the winners and handed out the prizes.
- Entries in the 2016 South Burnett High School Art Competition will remain on display at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily until the end of August. Admission to view the exhibition is free.
