A woman has died in a head-on crash on the Wide Bay Highway at Cinnabar on Tuesday afternoon.

Initial information suggests about 3:45pm, two vehicles, one travelling west and one travelling east, collided about one kilometre east of Wide Bay Creek.

The driver and sole occupant of one vehicle, a 71-year-old woman from Goomeri, died at the scene.

A man and a woman aged in their 60s, who were travelling in the other vehicle, were flown to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Rescue 500 helicopter took the female patient to Royal Brisbane Hospital; the male patient was flown by RACQ CareFlight to Nambour Hospital. Both travelled in a stable condition.

The Wide Bay Highway was blocked in both directions for several hours, with SES volunteers re-directing traffic.

The highway fully re-opened to traffic about 9:00pm.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
