A fifth candidate has entered the ring in the fight for the top job at the South Burnett Regional Council after the March 19 poll.

Brooklands resident Grant Newson is no stranger to elections.

He stood unsuccessfully for The Greens in the State seat of Nanango at the 2012 and 2015 elections, and in the Federal seat of Maranoa at the 2010 and 2013 elections.

He has also been active in anti-CSG protests on the Darling Downs and has been a long-time campaigner against Queensland’s anti-bikie VLAD laws.

In 2014 and 2015 he organised anti-VLAD concerts at the Wooroolin Sportsgrounds.

Mr Newson moved to the South Burnett with his wife Corin and established Grandco Carpet Cleaning at Brooklands in about 2002.

Before that, Mr Newson lived at Dalby for 17 years, working for Australia Post and Ergon Energy.

In recent years, he has been active in the South Burnett Residents Action Group, campaigning against Council spending on the Nanango Streetscape project.

He is now secretary of the newly formed Nanango & Districts SBRAG Inc, formed by ex-members of the South Burnett Residents Action Group.

Mr Newson told the media this week he would be standing as an independent candidate for South Burnett Mayor at the upcoming Council election.
