Applications are now open for local community safety and crime prevention initiatives under Round 2 of the Federal Government’s Safer Streets Program.
Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said up to $29.4 million in grants for Local Government and eligible incorporated not-for-profit organisations, community groups, and Chambers of Commerce is available nationally for projects that reduce crime and improve community safety.
“The Liberal Nationals Government is committed to improving the safety and security of local communities and our Safer Streets Program helps to deter criminal activity,” Mr Truss said.
“Security infrastructure such as CCTV cameras and security lighting add an additional layer of protection against crime and contribute to improved community safety and resilience.
“The presence of CCTV cameras causes would-be criminals to think before they act, helping to stop crime before it occurs, as the chance of them getting caught on camera is high.
“More than $19 million in funding has already been awarded under Round 1 of the Program for projects across 150 locations to deliver security enhancements such as better lighting and CCTV in retail, entertainment and commercial precincts.
“The Safer Streets Program uses proceeds of crime to fund local crime prevention projects, so yesterday’s crimes help prevent the crimes of tomorrow.”
