Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has called for nominations to recognise influential women in Queensland agriculture.

Nominations for the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award close on October 30.

“Women already hold many leading and influential positions in Queensland’s primary industries but there are many more with real commitment that I encourage to step out of the woodwork and be recognised for the important contributions they have made to the State’s agriculture sector,” Mrs Frecklington said.

The award aims to identify and support emerging women leaders with commitment and leadership potential to make a contribution to primary industries and rural communities.

Previous Queensland winners include:

  • Current Economic Development Officer at the South Burnett Regional Council Sharyn Garrett who won the State award in 2010 for her role in growing the kangaroo harvesting industry in western Queensland.
  • Smithfield Fieldlot co-owner and South Burnett Directions committee member Barb Madden who won the Queensland award in 2009 for her work with the Beef Industry Indigenous Alliance.

Each State and Territory winner will receive a $10,000 bursary.

Winners will also have the opportunity to participate in the Australian Institute of Company Directors company directors course.
