Kay Enkelmann, an employee at the Burnett Mary Regional Group’s Wondai office, has won the Australian Government Landcare Facilitator Award (Queensland) in this year’s Landcare Awards.

The awards are jointly sponsored by Landcare Australia and the Federal Government’s National Landcare Program, and in Queensland are run by Queensland Water and Land Carers.

This year’s awards had nine national categories.

“The Landcare awards have been recognising and celebrating Landcare’s strength and diversity for 25 years,” Landcare Australia CEO Tessa Jakszewicz said.

“They are a fantastic way of letting people know the positive impact Landcare is having in communities across the country.

“Whether it’s a passionate educator teaching our kids where their food comes from or a primary producer illustrating the link between sustainable land management and an improved bottom line, Landcarers are having a positive impact in all sectors of our community.”

Kay’s award was for people who had “demonstrated outstanding achievements in establishing, linking, supporting, enabling, and developing Landcare and/or production groups/networks that participate in sustainable farming practices and on-ground natural resource management”.

In the past few years, her work with BMRG has included arranging free one-on-one consultation sessions for South Burnett growers impacted by the 2013 floods – particularly those who suffered extensive soil losses – and working with Growing The Burnett on the development of sustainable farming practices and small acreage horticulture.

Kay will now proceed as finalist in the 2016 National Landcare Awards, competing against other state and territory finalists in her chosen category.
