A driver was airlifted to PA Hospital in Brisbane with serious injuries after a head-on collision on the Burnett Highway near Booubyjan on Friday morning.

The 57-year-old man, from Biloela, was driving a Toyota sedan which police will allege rounded a corner near Lawless Park on the wrong side of the road, colliding with a Toyota LandCruiser ute.

Police say the man was driving unlicensed. He suffered broken ribs and suspected internal injuries.

Police are also investigating if drug driving could have been one of the causes of the crash.

The driver of the second vehicle tried to take evasive action but could not avoid a collision.

He suffered only minor injuries in the incident.

The crash occurred about 8:00am, blocking the Burnett Highway.

Police, ambulance, QFES and SES crews attended the scene and the State Government’s Rescue 500 emergency helicopter landed on  the highway.

The highway was not fully re-opened until 11:00am.

Police investigations are continuing.
