A family-based Goomeri business has won a prestigious Queensland award for designing and installing a large LPG system at a cotton gin in Emerald.
James Giles Plumbing Pty Ltd was presented with the Queensland Gas Association’s 2015 Commercial & Industrial Gas Installation of the Year Award at a gala function in front of more than 530 industry representatives at the Brisbane Hilton on Friday night.
Head of Gas Department Justin Giles said the award was won for the design, installation and commissioning of a large Type A and B LPG system at the gin.
To top off the night for the company, Justin’s brother Michael, a 3rd Year apprentice at James Giles Plumbing , won the Construction Skills Queensland – CSQ Merv Harris Memorial Bursary Award.
The Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland 2015 Plumbing and Gas Awards are the peak industry awards for the State.
“Five of us went down to the night,” Justin told southburnett.com.au
“It was massive. We were told we were a finalist but when it came up on the screen it was a big shock.
“I knew that we had the skills and experience to take it out, but we were competing against some big companies.”
James Giles Plumbing Pty Ltd was formed from a merger of Justin’s gas business, his brother James’ plumbing business and their father Bill’s business.
The company specialises in commercial and industrial gas systems.
“We offer a service that not many people can offer,” Justin said.
“We have four industrial gasfitters on staff, and it’s extremely hard to achieve that as it can take up to 10 years of training. And they all live locally.
“We are doing projects across Queensland and NSW. We go up to Cairns and down into the heart of NSW.
“We were down in Narrabri and Moree last week.”
Other recent projects have included designing and installing gas back-up systems on macadamia farms and a gas fruit drying system for Gaypak at Gayndah.
Justin said the company involved other Goomeri businesses as much as possible in their jobs.
“At Gaypak, we got our local engineering company and electricians to do all the the duct work,” he said.
“We get jobs all across Queensland and we take locals with us.”
Another example was a 59m imported grain dryer which had no access or walkways.
“The local engineering company was invited to quote on building all the Australian Standard walkways,” Justin said.
“It’s a way of looking after the locals. They will travel to do the work.”
Justin obviously loves his job.
“It’s good because you get to see something everything different, work on something different every day of the week,” he said.
“It’s good fun! And now we have won an award to prove that we are one of the best in Queensland.”
