Wondai Show Society president Dennis Morris shows off the new demountable shower and toilet block unit being installed at the Wondai Showgrounds

The Wondai Show Society will save $4000 a year from now on thanks to a $35,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and an extra $5000 from Stanwell Corporation.

The Show Society put the funds into buying a demountable six-unit toilet and shower block, which will get its first public use at the Wondai Show next month.

But after the Show concludes, the Show Society expects caravanners will also find it a very welcome permanent addition to the Showgrounds’ facilities.

President Dennis Morris said the Show Society had used internet auction site Grays Online to source the unit, which was formerly owned by a mining company.

“It was in very good condition and would probably have cost upwards of $70,000 or more brand new,” Dennis said.

“So we purchased it and arranged to have it transported to Wondai, then mounted it onto a new concrete slab.”

The group have been spending the time since then connecting up the wiring and plumbing to get the new facility ready for use.

The unit has six, fully self-contained combined toilet and shower cubicles.

One improvement the Show Society has made is to install gas water heaters, which deliver hot water almost as soon as a shower is turned on.

The group also plans to put an awning over the front of the unit in coming weeks.

Dennis estimated the new block will have cost about $45,000 by the time work is complete.

But since the Show Society normally spend $4000 every year to hire similar facilities for the Show, he expects to break even on the deal by the end of this year.

Dennis said the Wondai Show Society were very grateful to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and Stanwell for their support.

“We simply wouldn’t have had the funds to do this ourselves without their help,” he said.
