Kingaroy Show weekend had the weather stacked against it – and lots of the events were cancelled – but you wouldn’t have known anything was amiss by the large number of smiling faces at the showgrounds.

The heavy rain in the lead-up to the weekend meant the Saturday night speedway meeting had to be cancelled – the speedway club’s last scheduled event for this season – because there was just too much water on the track.

Likewise, the junior motorbike races were also cancelled as well as the Grand Parade and the show-jumping on Sunday.

The beef cattle, dairy cattle, miniature horses and all equestrian events also could not go ahead.

However, a Young Judges competition managed to be pulled together on Saturday morning with the special help of the Kingaroy State High School agriculture department who loaned some cattle.

The truck show on Saturday and the ute show on Sunday also weren’t affected.

Show Society secretary Leesa Baker told southburnett.com.au the numbers through the gate were definitely down from last year but considering all the rain that fell on Friday, they were still good.

Some people stayed away fearing the grounds would be a quagmire, but the showgrounds actually held up well – after a lot of hard work put in by Show Society members and volunteers.

A large vacuum was brought in on Friday afternoon to suck up water, and following the cancellation of the cattle competitions, the sawdust from the cattle pavilions was brought over and spread around the tracks.

Volunteers worked into Friday night and began again early on Saturday morning to make certain everything was right.

Leesa said some of the Pavilion competitions were also down in numbers as people had not been able to drop off their entries – especially in the culinary sections – because they had been stranded at home.

Some of the expected produce, pot plant and cut flowers entries were also wrecked by the rain.

However, Leesa said the school displays this year were “brilliant” and the bad weather had only kept one trade display from turning up. There was also a large number of entries in the Lego competition.

Show highlights for the children were the free showbags, a huge sideshow alley with some very scary rides, and a massive fireworks show on Saturday night.

“All the people that did come along enjoyed themselves and had a good time,” Leesa said.
