It’s a sign of the times: three teenage ladies were among the 28 competitors who took part in the Burnett District Ladies Pairs Championships held at the Kingaroy Bowls Club this week.

In fact, 14-year-old Britney Wiley skipped the pair who took out the title.

With partner Pat Darlington, they were undefeated in the five rounds of the three-day tournament.

Fourteen teams from throughout the Burnett participated, and the four teams with the most amount of wins and the highest scores progressed to the semi-finals.

At the end of day one, there was only one team with three wins so the other three semi-finalists were determined by their overall scores

The District Ladies Pairs competition provided some thrilling games for the spectators.

Semi Finals:

  • Maureen Jahnke and Carol Watters (Murgon) def. Annette O’Brien (Kingaroy) and Bev Heness (Tansey) 22-16
  • Pat Darlington and Britney Wiley (Binjour) def. Jan Andresen and Hazel Keding (Wondai) 24-14

Third Place Playoff:

  • Annette O’Brien and Bev Heness def. Jan Andresen and Helen Keding 37-6

Results Of Final

The keenly contested final between Pat Darlington and Britney Wiley against Maureen Jahnke and Carol Watters was played over 21 ends.

The scores were close early, but Darlington and Wiley forged a slight lead and the Binjour team did not let up, with 14 year old Wiley playing well and skipping her team with maturity beyond her years;

They ran out comfortable winners to take the title 32-13.

In other Kingaroy news, the annual Kingaroy Bowls Club Men’s Presidents Day was held on Sunday with fourteen teams from throughout the South Burnett being represented.

President Barry O’Brien welcomed all the visitors and hoped they all had an enjoyable day.

Each team played 2 games, with the winners being determined by the amount of games won and the combined margins.

  • Winners – Wondai: Peter Ward, Terry Kilford, Alwyn Litzow and Evan O’Rouke – 2 wins + 29
  • Runners Up – Kingaroy: Dave Barwick, Peter Taylor, Danny Holligan and Trevor Turner – 2 Wins +19

On Thursday, in Pairs and Triples, twenty-six players took part, with conditions of play six points for a win and one point for each end won.

Two teams ended up with the same points score and the largest winning margin was used to resolve the tiebreaker.

The ultimate winners were Keith Muller, Paul Marychurch and John Coppard – 20 points +20 points margin

Kilcoy Ladies Games Director Gina Ryder, February Trophy Day winner Darrell Coffee and trophy donors Marg Worrall and Beryl Ferguson; Bob Sims and Leigh Irwin were absent

Last Tuesday was Ferguson/Worrall Trophy Day, and it produced a lot of results:

  • Spider: Harold Alford

Helene’s team now play Ivy Wrembeck, Lorri Holmes, Kay Dugdell and Eunice Smith in the final next
