Dairy farmers from throughout Queensland are getting set to head to the QDO conference which will be held in Gympie next Wednesday (November 5).

The conference follows the successful Toowoomba event held earlier this year.

The theme is “New Horizons” and the aim is to showcase emerging opportunities for the industry.

QDO president Brian Tessmann said the industry’s challenges would be acknowledged, particularly given the difficult year dairying has faced, but said the conference was an opportunity to look to the future.

The event is being held in partnership with the industry’s research and extension arm, Subtropical Dairy, and is being supported by the conference’s major sponsor, Dairy Australia.

“Holding two conferences, with the second in Gympie, allows us to bring the conference to farmers and makes it easier for them to attend,” he said.

“The Gympie conference will cap off the successful two-conference format for 2014. It features a packed program of informative and entertaining speakers.”

Conference-goers will hear from major processors as well as some of the smaller processors that are continuing to carve out a niche with their milk brands. It will also feature the full range of industry trends and topics from Dairy Australia and QDO.

Mr Tessmann said there were some opportunities the industry could look to.

“These include the growing interest in supplying milk to China, a small lift in farm-gate prices this year, and the much-needed prospect of further rises next year to help increase milk supply particularly during autumn and winter,” he said.

“The conference is a chance for us all to get together and discuss these challenges and opportunities and ensure that we carve out a positive future for our industry.”
