Work will begin soon on an $860,000 project at Cherbourg Hospital to provide modern consultation rooms for women and children, part of $1.5 million worth of upgrades scheduled at the hospital over the next six months.

The renovations of a vacant building will result in two purpose-built clinical consultation rooms.

Work on the new “Place of Healing” will begin next month following the awarding of the contract to Glen David Constructions Pty Ltd of Dalby.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service South Burnett Cluster Operations Manager Peta Rutherford said that currently women’s and children’s services were  provided out of a small outbuilding called the “hut”.

“The building is aged, in need of repair and the space is not functional,” she said.

“There is also insufficient space in the ‘hut’ to run the obstetric clinic which is currently run from the hospital’s outpatients area.

“A fully functional, fit-for-purpose building for the Women’s and Children’s Service is a key strategy to improving health outcomes for the Cherbourg community, especially those most at risk.

“The project is expected to extend the ‘useful life’ of the building by a further 20 years.”

Funding has also been provided by the State Government through its Backlog Maintenance and Remediation Program to complete a number of other projects at Cherbourg Hospital in the next six months.

These include:

  • Refurbishment of bathroom facilities in the women’s and men’s wards, including replacement of all fittings and vinyl as well as some modification of current design. The outcome will be modernised bathrooms with improved disability access. Estimated cost of works $190,000.
  • Renovation of the kitchen including replacing flooring, ceilings and wall linings with modern, easy-to-clean products. Estimated cost of works $300,000
  • External painting of the main hospital building is currently underway to improve the overall hospital appearance as well as maintain the condition of the building infrastructure. Estimated cost of works $175,000
