The Murgon Art Show celebrated its opening night on Friday by chalking up an incredible $20,000 worth of sales … but art buyers still have this weekend to snap up good buys.

The show, now in its fourth year, is running at the Murgon PCYC in Macalister Street from 8:30am to 5:00pm on Saturday; and from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Sunday.

The art show was originally created by the Rotary Club of Murgon but two years ago was jointly taken over by the Murgon Show Society and the PCYC, who now use it as an annual fundraiser.

Artists from the South Burnett, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast are invited to exhibit, with prize money awarded to the winners in each of the major categories, and all works are available for sale.

This year the show attracted 73 entries, including six in a special section for children’s art.

The 2014 exhibition was opened on Friday night by Cr Kathy Duff who said it was “a wonderful exhibition” that underlined the need for Murgon to have a permanent art gallery or art display space the same as Blackbutt, Nanango, Kingaroy and Wondai.

“The lack of an art gallery in Murgon is something we should all address,” Cr Duff told the audience.
