Technical difficulties have made my column a few hours late this morning, and I apologise to any readers who may have been inconvenienced by this.

There are no blue skies forecast for today and we’ve all had showers for the past few days, with most areas reporting over an inch.

This is good for the greens, but the weather interfered with a couple of tournaments last weekend.

Still, most clubs managed to complete most of their planned programs.

Here’s a rundown:

Binjour news:

The Zone final for the Burnett District Ladies were played at Albert Bowls Club in Gympie on August 13 and the Binjour girls won the Zone playoff against Wide Bay, Gympie and Sunshine Coast; Binjour’s team (Nola Darlington, Pat Darlington, Ann Faulkner and Leann Pace) scored 29-18 against Burrum Heads and 19-12 against Tewantin-Noosa

Yarraman news:

Yarraman Ladies had a good day on Wednesday, playing out the remaining semi-final of their Pairs competition.

Lorri Holmes and Jenny Moore defeated Ivy Wrembeck and Kay Dugdell 17-15 in a game that was quite a good one for the gallery. Lorri and Jenny will now play Helene Johnson and Daphne Stewart in the final.

Wednesday was also Trophy Day, and the winners were Neil Currell, Bev Profke and Yvonne Schultz, who defeated Kev Profke, Glenda Wolski and Roy Wrembeck 13 ends-2, 16-3.

Runners-up were John Moore and Alison Anderson who defeated Daphne Stewart and Eunice Smith 9 ends-6 – 16-13.

The ladies also made their presence felt at several carnivals around the district, and Helene Johnson, Daphne Stewart, Bev Profke and Doreen Fitch came home the winners of the Tansey one day Bottlebrush Carnival last week.

Helene also skipped the winning team at Kingaroy President Di Reed’s day on Tuesday.

Kingaroy news:

Kingaroy tried to hold their 2 Bowls Triples Championship last Saturday, but constant steady rain forced a postponement of the first round of the championships.

The eight teams were able to get on the greens on Sunday morning, however, with the first round commencing at 9:00am and the second round commencing at 1.30pm.

The weather – although fine – was cool and windy, and the games were played over 31 ends. And here are the results:

Last Thursday the club played selected Pairs and Triples, and 32 players took part in the regular weekly competition, including a number of interstate visitors.

Visitors Kath and Rob Wastall quickly got the run of the greens.

Although not playing in the same teams, they both managed to take home some of the day’s spoils.

The days games were determined with 6 points for a win and one point for each end won.

The winners were Peter Neilsen, Merv Anderson, Kath Wastell – 20 points.

The runners up were Dave Barwick and Rob Wastell – 19 points.

Nanango news:

In Scroungers last Friday, Greg Pogson was in the news again with 76pts, followed by next best Ben Pratap on 55pts.

And in 3 bowl Pairs last Tuesday, with 2 for an end and 4 for a win, there were some close matches:

On Wednesday, the Final of Ladies A Grade Singles was played between Evelyn Jensen and Julie Saunders.

After 14 ends, Julie had jumped away to a 22 to 6 lead after-Evelyn appeared to be struggling with the long ends being played.

But things changed: on the next two ends, Evelyn scored 2 three’s and followed up with 4 maximum scores of 4 to emerge the winner.

Final result? Evelyn Jensen def. Julie Saunders 28-22.

As I mentioned last week, Nanango had a big weekend planned for last Saturday and Sunday: the Nanango Winter Carnival, with Open Pairs on Saturday and Fours on Sunday.

28 teams came from around the state and New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, and the Carnival was officially opened by Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington.

The game started under wet conditions but unfortunately only one game was possible.

Scoring was wins plus ends with a countback on scores if required, and the top three were:

  • Kay and John Muller [Bongaree] – w plus 11 ends
  • Irene and Kerry Smith [Kingaroy] – w plus 10.5, 21pts
  • Trevor Gillies and Don Collins – w plus 10.5, 14pts.

By Sunday, though, the rain had cleared and 18 teams lined up for the mixed fours, which were played in 3 games of 14 ends with scoring wins plus ends.

The top three scores were:

  • Kay and John Muller teamed with Ian and Judy Hargreaves [Bongaree] – 3w plus 27
  • Vicky Horsburgh, Bonnie Gillies, Trevor Gillies, Don Collins [Crows Nest] – 3w plus 24
  • Lester Newman, Errol Young, Delvin Powys, Mark Williams [Kingaroy] – 2w1d plus 27
