The trial of a Wattle Camp woman charged with attempting to kill her husband with a hammer began in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday.

Kay Te Atarangi Lyons, 55, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder; an attempt by Lyons to plead guilty to a lesser charge was rejected by the Crown.

Her husband David, then aged 67, suffered a fractured skull in the incident in June 2013, and was flown to the PA Hospital in a serious condition.

The couple had been married for 37 years.

The Crown has alleged the hammer attack occurred after Lyons’ husband discovered she had “maxed out” a credit card.

The court was told Lyons had previously racked up credit card debts through gambling.

Mr Lyons said he was struck “four or five times” with the hammer.

The trial, before Chief Justice Tim Carmody, is listed to run for four days.
