St Mary’s Catholic College threw an old-fashioned fete on Sunday to help 14-year-old Pacey Clegg get to England.

Pacey, a St Mary’s student, was recently selected to represent Australia in a touring under-16s futsal side.

Futsal is a fast-paced indoor variant of soccer and the South Burnett has a growing following for the sport.

Pacey is one of the region’s best local players but has to raise funds for the trip to England.

Supporters turned out in force to help Sunday’s fundraising effort and St Mary’s school oval was awash with activity, with everything from firefighters and Blazer The Bear to a jumping castle, fairy floss and old-fashioned lucky dip stalls.

The event was organised in a matter of weeks by a small team led by Cathy Gartner. She told southburnett.com.au they now hoped to make fete an annual event to raise funds for other young local sportspeople.

“We have a lot of very talented athletes in the South Burnett, but there are very few sources of funding to help them realise their full potential,” Cathy said.

Pacey said he was very grateful for the efforts of everyone involved, and was looking forward to the trip even though he’d never been on a plane before.
