Skateboards and schoolwork don’t using go hand-in-hand but for a bunch of Year 10 art students it was all part of the curriculum this term.

About 50 students received maple skateboard decks to decorate as part of a Street Art project.

Kingaroy State High School art co-ordinator Wendy Corstiaans said it was a very structured unit covering stencils, text, cartoons and repetition – all themes in Street Art.

Each of the skateboards also had to have a “personal” component reflecting the individual student’s life and experiences.

Thirty-four of the finished pieces of artwork went on display today in the Youth Gallery at the Kingaroy Art Gallery and will stay on show until the end of January.

After that, the students will be able to take the decks back home.

And as they’re already pre-drilled for trucks and wheels, who knows … their next public appearance may well be at the Kingaroy Skate Park.
