The first of the Tractor Tattoo 2012 events occurs this Saturday with the official opening of the “Tea and Tractors” exhibition at the Kingaroy Information, Art and Heritage Precinct.

The mixed media exhibition, by Jumping Ant Arts and friends, will be opened by Mayor Wayne Kratzmann at 10:30am.

Following this, Jumping Ant Arts will host a Devonshire Tea.

The day will also include demonstrations, music by Sing Australia, and visitors will be able to participate in Sculpture in the Garden.

One of the main features will be a “yarn bombed” tractor – a community project involving knitters and weavers from across the South Burnett Region.

Funky Teapots, the result of two RADF-supported community days of working with clay, will also be on display at the gallery.

The teapots will be auctioned for charity at a future date. The winner of the Funky Teapot Challenge will be the one that brings the highest price at auction.

Mrs Fran van Vegchel, president of Jumping Ant Arts, said the group aimed to encourage young artists and promote art in the South Burnett.

She said the Funky Teapots project had been a wonderful opportunity to involve the community while promoting art and raising much-needed funds for a very worthwhile cause at the same time.

One of the groups that took up the challenge was local women’s running club, the GoGetta Girls.

“Our club is about getting out there and getting involved. We liked the funky teapot concept and are happy to be involved in community events,” GoGetta girl Colleen Gunn said.

“It gave us a chance to show that not only are we active but we are creative too!”

Activities at the Kingaroy Gallery will continue after this weekend.

A Madhatters Tea Party will be held from 2:00pm on September 15.

“Keep this date free, have your hat at the ready and watch for more information on this charity auction of the team teapots event in the near future,” Fran said.

There will also be the unveiling of the “community chain”.

“During the community days, participants were each asked to make a link from clay to create a length of chain,” Fran said.

“This represents the community linked together, working and supporting each other through tough times.

“Those who participated in the chain of friendship will be able to come along and see the finished chain displayed and find their initialled link.”
