New Year's Day Recovery Party - Maidenwell
The Maidenwell Hotel will be holding a New Year's Day Recovery Party today, with entertainment supplied by the South Burnett's most popular indigenous band Muddy Flats from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm, along with a seafood lunch. Yarraman New Year's Day Festival
Yarraman will be ringing in the New Year with a four-hour News Years Day Festival in the Errol Munt Recreation Grounds off the New England Highway just west of the CBD from 5:00pm until 9:00pm this afternoon and evening. The Festival will feature lots of great family fun including live musical entertainment; market stalls; a licensed bar; hot food and beverages; and a range of inexpensive amusement rides for children including jumping castles; a slide; Zorb balls in a pond; and dodgem cars (just $2 per ride or $15 for an unlimited ride armband). There'll also be a big fireworks display after dark. The Festival is run by the Yarraman Progress Association and is co-sponsored by Toowoomba Regional Council. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

The South Burnett PCYC in Macalister Street, Murgon will be running a movie marathon from 9:00am this morning, screening G and PG rated movies until noon, and then movies rated for teens aged 15 and over between 1:00pm and 5:00pm. Alcoholics Anonymous - Kingaroy
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other to help solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership. A.A. isn't allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution. State Funeral: Lady Bjelke-Petersen
A State Funeral for Lady Bjelke-Petersen will be held at Kingaroy Town Hall in Glendon Street, Kingaroy at 1:00pm this afternoon. The service is open to the public and several streets in Kingaroy's CBD will be closed to allow the ceremony to proceed without interruption. Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and routinely attract more than 300 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Two Hour Trail Ride - Blackbutt
Horsetrax Oz will be holding a two hour BYO horse trail ride for four riders around the Blackbutt-Benarkin forestry area today. This is an easy for a new rider who wants to get back in the saddle and spend some time riding with a small group of friends. Lady Flo Memorial Run
A memorial motorcycle run between Kingaroy and Maidenwell in honour of Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen will be held this morning, departing from The Peanut Van in Youngman Street, Kingaroy at 9:30am and travelling past Bethany Farm, then on to Nanango and Yarraman before finishing at the Maidenwell Hotel around 11:30am. South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
After a break for the Festive Season, the South Burnett Pantry will be reopening as usual from 8:30am to 12:30pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items). The Nanango Stamp Club will be holding its second Saturday of the month meeting at Nanango RSL in Henry Street, Nanango from 10:00am onwards this morning, followed by lunch for those who'd like to stay on for a bite afterwards. The club is the South Burnett's sole affiliated member of the Queensland Philatelic Council and promotes the hobby of stamp collecting in our region. Pink Stumps Golf Day - Wondai
The Wondai District Cricket Club will be holding their annual Pink Stumps Golf Day at the Wondai Country Club on the Bunya Highway just north of Wondai's CBD today. This fun get-together will be a 3 person ambrose over 18 holes with a warm-up sausage sizzle at 9:30am, followed by a shotgun start at 10:00am. In addition to great prizes for the longest drive and being nearest to pins, there'll be a prize for the best-dressed team (but you'll need to wear pink to be in the running), a multi-draw raffle and a money board. There'll also be a bar and BBQ running, and the $22 admission fee includes an awesome Wondai burger. Taromeo Country Music Club Social - Blackbutt
The Taromeo Country Music Club will be holding their first bi-monthly Sunday social for 2018 at the Blackbutt Golf Club in Langton Road, Blackbutt from 10:00am to around 4:00pm today. Entertainment will be provided by the visiting and guest artists. There'll also be multi-draw raffles, a money board, a licensed bar, plenty of food and refreshments and - of course! - lots of great country music and dancing. Back To School
The first term of the 2018 school year begins today and all school-age children attending State schools are required to return to class this morning. Term 1 will conclude on Thursday, March 29 with an eighteen day Easter break. Motorists should take note that reduced speed limits around school grounds also begin to apply from today and you can face a steep fine for exceeding them - so drive slowly.

Historic Boondooma Homestead on the Durong-Mundubbera Road at Boondooma will be hosting an evening dinner and concert from 5:00pm today. Activities will kick off with a flag-raising ceremony followed by a BBQ dinner and live entertainment from Buddy Thomson, Lynne Bennett and others. A bus will be running from Murgon on the day (picking up at Wondai, Hivesville and Proston) but you'll need to pre-book a seat by phoning the Proston Country Bus Service on (07) 4168-9296, who'll advise you of the timetable.

Australia Day
Today is Australia Day, a national public holiday. Australia Day marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Philip raised the British flag at Port Jackson near the present-day site of Sydney and became Governor of the new British colony of New South Wales. Australia Day used to be called Foundation Day until the name was changed in 1946, but since then it's grown to become one of our key national celebrations. It's also traditionally the day when our nation hands out Australia Day Awards to outstanding citizens who've made significant contributions to the country and/or their communities. Here's your guide to what's happening around our region today:

Australia Day Afternoon Tea - Proston
The Proston Scout Club will be hosting a a free afternoon tea with tea, coffee, damper and lamingtons at the troop's den in Rodney Street, Proston from 2:30pm to around 4:00pm today. Cold drinks will be on sale, too, and there'll also be a family friendly cricket game as well as a sign on day for Scouts membership. Everyone is welcome.

Australia Day At Nanango RSL
Nanango RSL in Henry Street, Nanango will be celebrating Australia Day with a complimentary lunch time sausage sizzle. The club will also be holding a BBQ competition in the afternoon, and following that with a special $10 per head BBQ lamb dinner.

Australia Day Community Breakfast - Hivesville
Hivesville will be celebrating Australia Day with a community BBQ breakfast at Anzac Park (opposite the Hivesville Hotel). The breakfast is being hosted by the Hivesville Progress Association and will get underway around 7:00am.

Australia Day Breakfast - Wondai
A free Australia Day Community Breakfast will be held at the Wondai Town Hall in Mackenzie Street, Wondai from 7:00am to 9:00am this morning. Apart from a great brekkie prepared by the Wondai Lions Club there'll also be live entertainment from the Wondai Town & District Band, an Australia Day Affirmation Ceremony and a Flag Raising Ceremony.

South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Pantry will be open from 8:30am to 12:30pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items). Tyson Clancy-Jones - Kingaroy

Australia Day Celebrations - Kingaroy
Kingaroy's Australia's Day celebrations will be held at the Town Common Hall in Oliver Bond Street this morning, kicking off with a free community breakfast at 7:00am. This will be followed with a range of family fun activities including face painting and a jumping castle for children; bush poetry; and live music by Steve Hood on button accordion. At 9:00am, a Flag Raising Ceremony will be performed by the 125 Army Cadet unit, and this will be followed by performances from Sing Australia South Burnett and the Taabinga and Coolabunia State School Choirs. Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington will give an address which will be followed by a recognition of Australia Day Award winners from the Kingaroy area. The morning will round out with the traditional pie and lamington-eating competitions at 9:45am, followed by a raffle draw and cane toad races. Everyone is welcome!

Australia Day At The Dairy Museum - Murgon
Murgon will be celebrating Australia Day with a community breakfast and family fun morning at the Queensland Dairy & Heritage Museum in Gesslers Road, Murgon. The BBQ breakfast will be held from 7:00am to 8:00am, and this will be followed by a recognition of Murgon's Australia Day Award winners at 8:30am, then by live musical entertainment, a Flag Raising Ceremony and a great morning tea to round things out. Australia Day Breakfast - Blackbutt
The Blackbutt Avocado Festival committee, the Blackbutt Benarkin Heritage and Tourism Association, Blackbutt Benarkin Aged Care and the Taromeo Rural Fire Brigade will be jointly hosting the Timbertowns' Australia Day celebrations at the Blackbutt Memorial Hall in Bowman Road from 8:00am to around 11:00am this morning. Activities will kick off with a free sausage sizzle followed by a range of free family activities including a jumping castle, best dressed hat competition, gumboot tossing and rolling pin throwing and avocado rolling competitions, plus live music. Everyone is welcome!

Australia Day Clean-Up And Pool Party - Yarraman
Toowoomba Regional Council and the Yarraman Progress Association will be celebrating Australia Day with a clean up of the Errol Munt Reserve off the New England Highway in Yarraman from 7:00am to 11:00am this morning. After the cleanup there'll be a free BBQ lunch, followed by a pool party at the neighbouring Yarraman Swimming Pool between 1:00pm and 4:00pm, with snacks and drinks available from the pool's canteen. Everyone is welcome.

Australia Day Breakfast - Nanango
The South Burnett Regional Council, the Nanango Tourism and Development Association and the Nanango Show Society will be jointly hosting a gold coin donation Australia Day Community Breakfast at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 7:00am this morning. The breakfast will be followed by a flag raising ceremony and the presentation of Australia Day award winners from the Nanango area. There will also be bush poets, the traditional dog high jumps, a tug-o-war, and a great morning tea of damper and golden syrup at around 10:30am, followed by watermelon until noon. Coffee, tea and cold drinks will be available all morning and everyone is welcome!

Bowls Club Bingo - Kingaroy
