New Year's Day Recovery Party - Maidenwell
The Maidenwell Hotel will be holding a New Year's Day Recovery Party today, with entertainment supplied by the South Burnett's most popular indigenous band Muddy Flats from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm, along with a seafood lunch. Yarraman New Year's Day Festival
Yarraman will be ringing in the New Year with a four-hour News Years Day Festival in the Errol Munt Recreation Grounds off the New England Highway just west of the CBD from 5:00pm until 9:00pm this afternoon and evening. The Festival will feature lots of great family fun including live musical entertainment; market stalls; a licensed bar; hot food and beverages; and a range of inexpensive amusement rides for children including jumping castles; a slide; Zorb balls in a pond; and dodgem cars (just $2 per ride or $15 for an unlimited ride armband). There'll also be a big fireworks display after dark. The Festival is run by the Yarraman Progress Association and is co-sponsored by Toowoomba Regional Council. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other to help solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership. A.A. isn't allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution. A State Funeral for Lady Bjelke-Petersen will be held at Kingaroy Town Hall in Glendon Street, Kingaroy at 1:00pm this afternoon. The service is open to the public and several streets in Kingaroy's CBD will be closed to allow the ceremony to proceed without interruption. Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and routinely attract more than 300 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Two Hour Trail Ride - Blackbutt
Horsetrax Oz will be holding a two hour BYO horse trail ride for four riders around the Blackbutt-Benarkin forestry area today. This is an easy for a new rider who wants to get back in the saddle and spend some time riding with a small group of friends. Lady Flo Memorial Run
A memorial motorcycle run between Kingaroy and Maidenwell in honour of Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen will be held this morning, departing from The Peanut Van in Youngman Street, Kingaroy at 9:30am and travelling past Bethany Farm, then on to Nanango and Yarraman before finishing at the Maidenwell Hotel around 11:30am. Everyone is welcome to take part, and funds raised by the run will go to assist the Yarraman SES, the Maidenwell Community Group, Orana Aged Care and the Endeavour Foundation. More details? South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
After a break for the Festive Season, the South Burnett Pantry will be reopening as usual from 8:30am to 12:30pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items). Nanango Stamp Club Meeting

Pink Stumps Golf Day - Wondai
The Wondai District Cricket Club will be holding their annual Pink Stumps Golf Day at the Wondai Country Club on the Bunya Highway just north of Wondai's CBD today. This fun get-together will be a 3 person ambrose over 18 holes with a warm-up sausage sizzle at 9:30am, followed by a shotgun start at 10:00am. In addition to great prizes for the longest drive and being nearest to pins, there'll be a prize for the best-dressed team (but you'll need to wear pink to be in the running), a multi-draw raffle and a money board. There'll also be a bar and BBQ running, and the $22 admission fee includes an awesome Wondai burger. Back To School
The first term of the 2018 school year begins today and all school-age children attending State schools are required to return to class this morning. Term 1 will conclude on Thursday, March 29 with an eighteen day Easter break. Motorists should take note that reduced speed limits around school grounds also begin to apply from today and you can face a steep fine for exceeding them - so drive slowly.

Australia Day
Today is Australia Day, a national public holiday. Australia Day marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Philip raised the British flag at Port Jackson near the present-day site of Sydney and became Governor of the new British colony of New South Wales. Australia Day used to be called Foundation Day until the name was changed in 1946, but since then it's grown to become one of our key national celebrations. It's also traditionally the day when our nation hands out Australia Day Awards to outstanding citizens who've made significant contributions to the country and/or their communities. Benarkin Forestry Ride
Horsetrax Oz will be running an easy 12.5km ride through the Benarkin Forestry from 9:00am this morning. The ride will be a good one for intermediate riders or intermediate horses with a few hills but is not suitable for beginners. Three of the South Burnett's wineries will be open for lunch today. At Moffatdale, Moffatdale Ridge will have their cellar door verandah cafe open for light meals and snacks from 10:00am to 4:00pm. And in Kingaroy, Cranes Winery and Kingsley Grove will be open the same hours, serving up wines and platters (at Cranes) and wines, cheese platters and wood-fired pizzas (at Kingsley Grove). Super Blue Blood Moon
A Super Blue Blood Moon - a total lunar eclipse occurring when the moon is at its closest point to the earth and gets coloured red by refracted light - will be happening in our skies from 9:48pm to 1:11am tonight. This particular celestial event is so rare it hasn't happened in the South Burnett since 1866 (ie 151 years ago), so it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The best vantage points will be open, flat ground or any hilltop with a clear view to the north, and preferably away from any bright lights.
