End Of The World?
Some people think today is supposed to be the end of the world because today is the day the ancient Mayan Long Calendar comes to an end. However, JJJ's Dr Karl worked out earlier this year that this calculation failed to take into account the Western world's move from the Julian to the Gregoran calendar in 1582 - and in that case, the world was actually supposed to end on December 7th (and didn't). In reality, the Mayan Long Calendar simply counts "eras" of about 5,125 years. So all that will happen today is that we'll move from the Mayan "fourth world" into a "fifth world" (ie a new era) - but otherwise, things will largely be just the same as they've always been. However you can pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate the new era if you wish - perhaps while you read more about all of this on Wikipedia.
