Reserve Forces Day - Wondai
Today is Reserve Forces Day, which commemorates the two million-plus Australian men and women who've served in the ranks of the Army, Navy and Air Force Reserve since 1948 and also recalls the many thousands who served in the militia and other volunteer formations in the years prior to that. Wondai will be marking the event with a flag-raising ceremony outside the former Wondai Shire Council chambers in Mackenzie Street at 10:00am, and then a parade which will march off at from the Post Office paddock at the eastern end of Mackenzie Street at 11:00am. The Parade is open to anyone who served in the CMF or in the reserves of any of the three Service Arms at any time, as well as any Regulars or Nasho’s. Naturally, spectators are encouraged to come along and wave the flag to show their support! Wondai is the smallest centre in Australia to hold a Reserve Forces Day parade, but it's always well supported. More details? Kilkivan Stock Horse Futurity & Ute Show
The second - and final - day of the 2012 Kilkivan Stock Horse Futurity and Ute Show will be held at Kilkivan Showgrounds in Kilkivan from 8:00am this morning through until late afternoon. The Futurity will focus on Australian stock horses and organisers expect a good roll-up that will please most horse fanciers. The Kilkivan Showgrounds were almost wiped out in the January 2011 floods, but after 18 months of intensive reconstruction they're looking very spruce and modern these days. So if you'd like to camp there over the weekend, you can do so at no charge. There's also no charge to view the Futurity or the Ute Show, and everyone is welcome along. More details? Art Exhibition Opening - Blackbutt
The Friends of Cultcha will be opening their latest monthly exhibition for 2012 at the former Nanango Shire Council Art Gallery in the Archie Muir Centre in Hart Street, Blackbutt at 7:00pm this evening. Tonight's opening will feature the works of a talented Blackbutt artist and it will be accompanied by wine, cheese and all the usual fun of a Friends' event. NAIDOC Open Day Celebration - Cherbourg
This week (1st to 8th July) is NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC originally stood for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, but has grown to become an annual celebration of the achievements and uniqueness of indigenous arts and culture. Cherbourg's Ration Shed Museum and Historical Precinct at 19 Barambah Avenue in Cherbourg will be celebrating NAIDOC Week this year with an Open Day from 11:00am onwards. This get-together will feature community events, camp oven cookery and youth activities provided by the PCYC and YACCA, as well as tours of the complex. There'll also be live entertainment from 10:30am onwards including a performance by the Wakka Wakka Dancers, music from Muddy Flats and lots more. 2012 State Of Origin Final
The third (and final) 2012 State Of Origin match between the Queensland Maroons and the NSW Blues will be held at Suncorp Stadium at 8:00pm tonight. The Maroons are striving for their seventh consecutive State Of Origin series win and with the current score now level at one-all, the Blues are mighty desperate to stop them and the Maroons are equally desperate to win. This means tonight's match should be really great, edge-of-the-seat footy and well worth watching. Naturally, South Burnett footy fans will be glued to TV screens around the region. But several local pubs and clubs will also be getting into the State Of Origin spirit tonight with big screen telecasts if you'd prefer to share the experience with other fans. The classes are led by professional art teacher Cory McAulay and cover drawing skills (including line, proportion, tonal values, composition, format, positive and negative shapes and perspective) and painting skills (including planning, organising the work area, painting techniques, washes and glazing etc) over the course of several weeks. The weekend-long "Committed To The Community Campdraft" will be held at Proston Showgrounds all this weekend. And for visitors camping at the Showgrounds tonight (as well as anyone else who'd like to come along) there'll be a free concert by talented South Burnett country rock performer Amber Goldsmith; a gold coin donation sausage sizzle, a licensed bar and raffles on offer. The campdraft is being put on by Murgon's Graham House Community Centre and a number of local sponsors as a fundraiser for Graham House. The campdraft will get underway at 7:00am tomorrow morning and continue right through until late Sunday afternoon.

Art Exhibition Opening - Wondai
The Wondai Regional Art Gallery on the roundabout at Wondai will be opening their sixth monthly exhibition for 2012 with a wine and cheese tasting at 6:00pm this evening. Tonight's exhibition will showcase the works of well-known South Burnett artist Garry Eye (pictured at right) in the Main Gallery. Garry has been a practising artist and art teacher for more than 30 years, executing works in a wide variety of media, and tonight's exhibition will be a retrospective showcasing his output (including a number of works from Garry's private collecton that have rarely - or never - been on public display before). The Front Gallery, meanwhile, will feature pastel and acrylic works by Julie Postle which will be complemented by found object works crafted by Sue Postle; and the Third Gallery will feature Aboriginal artworks (including some painted onto small round saw blades) by talented indigenous artist Peter Carlo, while works by students from St Joseph's School in Murgon will be featured in Kidz Korner. South Burnett Soccer - Kingaroy and Murgon
After a one week mid-season break last weekend for the school holidays, the 10th round of the Evolution Solar Soccer League will be played out in Kingaroy and Murgon today. In Kingaroy, the 2nd division Gunners will play the Nanango Panthers at Tom Alford Oval in Oliver Bond Street at 2:00pm. They'll be followed by the Gunnettes playing Nanango in the Women's Division at 3:15pm; and then the 1st Division match between the two teams at 5:00pm. And in Murgon, Barambah 2nd Division will play Wests at 2:00pm at the Murgon soccer grounds, followed by the Women's Division match at 3:15pm and then the 1st Division clash at 5:00pm. There won't be any junior matches this weekend because of school holidays, but they'll resume next Saturday at the Kingaroy soccer grounds. Spectators and supporters are most welcome!

South Burnett Rugby League Triple Header - Wondai
The 12th Round of the South Burnett Premier League will be played at the Wondai Sportsgrounds off the Bunya Highway in Wondai today. Today's games will kick off with an U18s match between Murgon and Eastern Suburbs at 11:00am and that will be followed by the first A-grade clash of the day between the Kingaroy Red Ants and the Nanango Stags at 12:15pm . This, in turn, will be followed by the Bluckbutt Timbertowners taking on the Murgon Mustangs at 1:45pm, and then the Cherbourg Hornets will play the Wondai Wolves at 3:15pm. Because of school holidays there won't be any junior games today - they'll all resume next Saturday - but spectators and supporters are very welcome to the U18s and A-grade matches, which promise to be another great day of footy.

The official launch will see the announcement of the face of the 2012 Relay and the acknowledgement of 2012's patron Rowena Dionysius. South Burnett Bull Tour - Murgon and Nanango
A South Burnett Bull Tour to help connect Droughtmaster bulls with potential buyers will be running in the region all this weekend. A bus will depart from Murgon at 5:50am and Nanango at 6:50am today and tomorrow to take buyers to a thirteen local Droughmaster studs where they can personally inspect more than 200 bulls that are currently available for sale, returning to each town in the evening. Overnight accommodation will be available in both towns (for non-South Burnett buyers) and a smoko and lunch will be provided on the tour, as well as a cookup at Magnum Stud today. South Burnett Regional Council Special Meeting
The South Burnett Regional Council will be holding a special meeting at 4:00pm this afternoon at the Council's chambers in Glendon Street, Kingaroy. The purpose of the meeting is to look at the construction of Link Road in the Sunnyvale housing development. The dilemma facing the Council is that they need to build this road by June 2013 or risk losing a $3.7 million grant towards the roads's construction costs from the Queensland State Government. However - because of economic factors - the development itself isn't likely to proceed any time soon. Meetings are open to the public.

Nanango Hack & Pony Club 50th Anniversary Campdraft
The Nanango Hack and Pony Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend with a campdraft (today) and a guymkhana (tomorrow) at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street, Nanango. Today's campdraft has attracted more than 120 competitors and the action will get underway at 8:30am and run on until 4:00pm, when prizes will be handed out to the winners. Tomorrow's gymkhana will also get underway at 8:30am and will run into the early afternoon. Admission to the campdraft is 100% free for spectators and overnight camping facilities are available for $12.50 per camp site. Saturday Rugby Union - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Thrashers will be playing their fifth home game for this season at T.J. O'Neill Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy at 1:30pm this afternoon when they come up against the Toowoomba Bears in what promises to be a very interesting match. The Thrashers enjoyed their first triumph of the season against the fancied USQ Saints when the teams met at St Marys oval a fortnight ago, which came just a week after a hairsbreadth loss to UQ Highfields. So all eyes will be on the local lads to see if they can continue what appears to be a big unpswing in their form. Spectators and supporters are very welcome!

Kingaroy Community Garden Working Bee & Planning Meeting
The South Burnett Regional Council's Healthy Communities Initiative are re-establishing a Kingaroy Community Garden group around the Pound Street Community Garden - and today they'll be holding a Working Bee & Planning Meeting at the garden between 9:00am and 11:00am to help set the group's future direction. Anyone who'd like to get involved in this project is very welcome to come along (BYO chair, sun protection, water bottle, gardening gloves and closed-toe shoes). There'll also be a shared morning tea, so bring a plate. Charity Garage Sale - Kingaroy
A Charity Garage Sale will be held at Huston Motors in Rogers Drive, Kingaroy (just south of town) today to help raise funds for the Royal Children's Hospital. The sale has been organised by Ken and Cathy Goodhew and Dean Gauld, all of whom will be cycling 260km between Dalby and Chinchilla from Friday August 14 to Sunday August 26 as part of the annual K's 4 Country Kids marathon. There'll also be a sausage sizzle on site and lots of great bargains to be had. Everyone is welcome.
