Labour Day Public Holiday
Today is Labour Day, a public holiday. Most South Burnett businesses will be closed today or operating on restricted hours. Labour Day first began in the 1860s when a general campaign for an 8-hour working day began to erupt around the civilised world. At that time most Australians were expected to work 60 or more hours a week and the social security net that underpins modern society didn't exist. This meant that everyday conditions for the majority of people were pretty awful. This inequity between the rich and poor inevitably led to widespread civil unrest. Labour Day was originally celebrated in March but this was moved to the first Monday in May in 1893 after the Great Shearer's Strike broke out at Barcaldine two years earlier. Footnote: Even though some workers achieved an 8-hour day by the 1890s, it still took until 1916 (an incredible 50 years of campaigning) before all Queensland workers won the 8-hour day struggle. Decent working conditions and a social security system are something that we all take for granted now - often without a second thought about how much effort our grandparents and great grandparents put into achieving it.

The Ringsfield Film Society will be screening a Sunday afternoon movie at their cinema - the old chapel in the grounds of Ringsfield House at 41-45 Alfred Street, Nanango - at 2:30pm today. This month's classic film is "The Shiralee", a true Australian-themed classic starring Peter Finch (pictured) as Macauley the swagman, who is seeking to escape his responsibilities but finds himself unable to shed his greatest burden, his five-year-old daughter Buster. The Shiralee was produced in 1957 by Britain's Ealing studios and although all outdoor scenes were shot in Australia and Aussie actors Charles Tingwell, Bill Kerr and Ed Devereaux all had parts, it is really a British film - one of five that Ealing shot in Australia - and it provides an alien view of our country that is very noticeable 60 years later, though this probably wasn't the case with audiences of the time. A pre-movie lunch will be available at the Ringsfield House Cafe (bookings are advisable) and an $8 Devonshire tea will be available at interval, too. More details? Phone Ringsfield House on (07) 4163-3345 or send them an email. You can also find out more about the Film Society on their Facebook page.
