Today is Good Friday, a declared public holiday. Almost all businesses will return to normal from tomorrow, however, and most things will be open as usual on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Racing Club will be holding their popular annual Easter Race Meeting meeting at the Lee Park Raceway off the D'aguilar Highway just south of Nanango from 1:30pm until around 4:30pm this afternoon. Today's meeting will have a "Rock & Roll" theme and everyone is encouraged to either dress up in their best Rock & Roll gear. Women Walk The World - Kumbia
The Kumbia QCWA will be hosting an unusual fund-raiser today: a non-stop walkathon around Kumbia by members Val Smith and Marion Mudra to raise awareness and funds for the Women Walk The World project (WWTW), which gives support to the women and girls in Third World countries who must walk many kilometers each day to collect water for their families. The WWTW project is being run by the Associated Country Women Of The World around the world on April 29th, and funds raised from the event will be used to help construct wells in Third World villages. 103rd Annual Nanango Show
The main public day of the 103rd Annual Nanango Show will get underway at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street, Nanango at 7:00am this morning when the gates open and prime cattle judging begins. There'll be all the usual show fun including a post-ripping competition, woodchopping, a ute muster, championship dog show, and a full range of ring events. The Show will be officially opened with a Grand Parade at 1:30pm. The popular rodeo will start at 4:00pm followed by a precision motorcycle stunt riding display at 7:00pm, the Heritage Fireworks Display at 7:30pm and a helicopter jump at 8:00pm. The Midnight Memphis Movers will be providing live entertainment. 50th Anniversary Golden Spurs Campdraft - Proston
The first day of the weekend-long 50th Anniversary Golden Spurs Campdraft will get underway at the Proston Sportsground the Proston-Boondooma Road at the edge of town from 6:30am this morning. This weekend's campdraft marks the occasion in 1963 when the campdraft moved to its new location at the Proston Sportsground and took on the Golden Spurs name (previous campdrafts had been held on what is now the town's golf course) - and to celebrate the occasion, a number of special features have been added this year. They include a special display of historic Golden Spurs memorabilia in the Sportsground Hall which will open at 6:00pm this evening; and a special “Invitational Draft” for former Golden Spurs winners that will begin this morning and will be decided at around 3:00pm this afternoon. More than 565 first round nominations have been received for this year's campdraft (including 40 from past winners) and if you're a campdrafting fan, this looks like being a really great weekend out. The 2nd Round of the South Burnett Premier League will be played this weekend at Blackbutt, Nanango and Cherbourg. In all cases, matches will start with the junior teams and work their way up to the A-grade seniors. Here's where the action will be happening:

ANZAC Day
Today is Anzac Day, Australia's most solemn day. Anzac Day is the occasion when we remember the sacrifices of the tens of thousands of Australians who fought and died for the democratic principles our country is committed to in conflicts all over the world. Most South Burnett businesses will either be closed completely today or operating on restricted hours (generally from 12:00 noon onwards) as a mark of respect. Anzac Day commemorative services will be held throughout the region from 4:28am onwards: the same time the original ANZACs began their assault on the beaches of Gallipoli 97 years ago. Here's where they'll be held:

  • Blackbutt and Benarkin will be commemorating Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the Blackbutt Cenotaph at 4:28am; a gunfire breakfast at the Blackbutt RSL at 5:00am; a Morning Service at the church at the corner of Muir and Douglas Sts at 9:30am followed by a march to the Cenotaph and wreath-laying at 10:00am.
     
  • Nanango will be commemorating Anzac Day today with a Dawn Service at the Nanango War Memorial at 5:25am; a public pilgrimage to the War Service graves at Nanango Cemetery at 7:30am; a parade along Drayton Street to the War Memorial at 9:30am; a commemoration service and wreath-laying at the Nanango War Memorial at the corner of Gipps and Drayton Streets at 10:00am; and then an invitation-only luncheon at the Nanango RSL at 11:30am.
     
  • Maidenwell will be commemorating Anzac Day with a special morning tea arranged by the Maidenwell QCWA at Maidenwell Hall at 10:30am. This will be followed by an Anzac Day Memorial Service at the Maidenwell War Memorial in Jack Pool Park in the centre of town at 11:30am.
     
  • Kingaroy's Anzac Day commemorations will start at 4:28am this morning with a Dawn Service at the Rotunda in Memorial Park. This will be followed by a pilgrimage to the war graves at Taabinga Cemetery at 8:00am. The town's traditional Anzac Day march will commence at 11:00am outside the Kingaroy RSL Club and proceed through town to Memorial Park in Haly Street, where a citizens' observance will be held at the Cenotaph at around 11:15am.
     
  • Wondai's commemorations will begin at 5:00am with the town's traditional Dawn Service and procession, commencing at the Wondai Post Office. This will be followed at 8:00am with a pilgrimage to the War Service graves at Wondai Cemetery; and then at 10:00am with a Commemoration Service and wreath laying at the Wondai War Memorial in the CBD.
     
  • In Proston, a Dawn Service will be held at 5:30am at the RSL Rooms in Collingwood Street; and...
     
  • In Hivesville, a Dawn Service will be held in Main Street at 5:30am, followed by a breakfast in the Main Street park.
     
  • Murgon will be commemorating Anzac Day with a fellowship at the Murgon Services Club from 4:45am, followed by a Dawn Service at the Murgon Cenotaph in Gore Street opposite the club at 5:30am. Later in the morning there'll be a commemorative parade at 9:50am (assembly starts at 9:30am) and a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph at 10:00am. Refreshments will be served in the Murgon Services Club after the memorial service.
     
  • Kumbia will be commemorating Anzac Day with a morning Memorial March. Participants should assemble at the flower garden at the northern end of Bell Street at 8:45am. The march will then proceed to Kumbia Hall for a commemoration service and morning tea.
     
  • Yarraman will be commemorating Anzac Day with a dawn service at the Yarraman Cenotaph in Memorial Park at 6:00am. This will be followed by a pilgrimage to the War Service graves at the Yarraman Cemetery at 7:30am; and then later in the morning an Anzac Day March will assemble at the Yarraman police station and proceed to the Cenotaph at Memorial Park. The march will start at 10:45am and will be followed by a Memorial Service and wreath-laying at 11:00am, then by refreshments at the Yarraman Community Hall in Browne Street.
     
  • Wooroolin will be commemorating Anzac Day with a Memorial Service at 11:00am at the Memorial Hall on the Bunya Highway at Wooroolin.
     
  • Goomeri will be commemorating Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the Memorial Clock at 5:15am, followed by a pilgrimage to the Goomeri war service graves at 7:00am. Later in the morning this will be followed with a procession from Dickinson Park to the Goomeri Hall of Memory at 10:30am (which will include a wreath-laying at the Clock), then a commemorative service at the Hall of Memory at 10:45am.
     
  • Kilkivan will be commemorating Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the cenotaph in Bligh Street at 5:30am, followed by a breakfast at the Kilkivan Hotel at around 6:00am. At 10:30am a procession will proceed from the park to the Kilkivan Public Hall. This will be followed by a commemoration and wreath-laying service at 11:00, then a light lunch provided by the Kilkivan QCWA, and then by two-up games at the Killy Hotel at 1:30pm.
     
  • Woolooga will be commemorating Anzac Day with a commemoration service and wreath-laying ceremony at Woolooga's Memorial Park at 10:30am. This will be followed by a light lunch at Woolooga Hall
     
  • Bunya Mountains: The residents of the Bunya Mountains will hold an Anzac Day Service at 8:00am this morning at the Lone Pine Tree diagonally opposite the National Parks office. The tree was dedicated by the young people of the Mountains in 2005.
     
  • Cooyar will be commemorating Anzac Day with a street march from the Cooyar Memorial Hall to the war memorial at 9:15am, followed by a service at 10:00am.
     
  • Cherbourg will be commemorating Anzac Day with a service at the Cherbourg War Memorial at 8:00am.
     
  • Widgee will commemorate Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at 6:00am at the Widgee Anzac Memorial. this will be followed by a march at 9:30am from Webb Park to the Anzac Memorial on Gympie Woolooga Road, and then a service which will start after the march.
     
  • Boondooma will commemorate Anzac Day with a service at 9:00am at the 2012 Bush Balladeers Muster, which begins at Boondooma Homestead today and runs through until April 29th.

The 3rd Round of the South Burnett Premier League will be played this weekend with a massive triple header at Kingaroy's T.J. O'Neill Oval in Youngman Street. As there are no junior games this weekend – because of the Wide Bay 47th Battalion Junior Carnival being played at Gympie – the South Burnett clubs have decided to play all Senior games at the one location. And it looks like being a huge day for league fans! Matches will kick off at 12:00 noon with U18s Kingaroy v Wallaroos. This will be followed at 1:30pm with Cherbourg v Wondai, then at 3:00pm with Blackbutt v Murgon before concluding with the 4:30pm kick-off for Kingaroy v Nanango. Queensland Local Government Elections
The 2012 Queensland Local Government elections will be held today, and South Burnett residents will go to the polls to elect Mayors and Councillors for the Gympie, South Burnett and Toowoomba Regional Shire Councils, depending on where they live. Today's elections are the first since the Bligh Government's forced council mergers in 2008 and they'll give voters the chance to express their views about how things have turned out. Readers in the Gympie and Toowoomba Regional Council areas will all have to turn out and vote today (voting is compulsory) but roughly half of South Burnett Regional Council voters don't have to vote because three of the Council's six divisions are uncontested. The 78th Annual Blackbutt Show will be held at the Blackbutt Showgrounds in Hart Street, Blackbutt from early this morning until late tonight. This year's Show will feature a full range of horse events (anything from led breed and ridden breed through to hacks and rider classes). There'll also be a big roll-up of stud cattle and poultry; the popular woodchop and sawing competitions; lots of ring events; post ripping; wool spinning demonstrations and a Ute Muster too. South Burnett Feather Club 37th Annual Show & Sale - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Feather Club - an organisation which aims to further the development of show poultry - will be holding its 37th annual show and sale at the Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman St, Kingaroy from 8:00am onwards this morning. The Feather Show usually attracts more than 450 entries (covering 30 different breeds) from as far afield as Gympie, Monto, Brisbane and Bundaberg and this year looks like being no different.
