Wondai Art Gallery Opening
The Wondai Regional Art Gallery on the roundabout at Wondai will be opening their latest monthly exhibition for 2019 with a wine and cheese tasting at 6:00pm tonight. This month the gallery will be hosting "Our Country" by artist Anne Shaw in the front gallery; “Exploring Lights, Textures and Techniques” by artists Carmel Birchley, Maggie Spenceley and Colleen Helmore in the main gallery; "As I See It" by artist Suzi Wells in ther rear gallery; and works by students from St Joseph's Primary School in Kidz Korner. As usual, tonight's opening will also feature great hot and cold finger foods and punch, along with wine tastings from Cranes Winery, live entertainment and lots of fun socialising. The Nanango Blue Light Disco committee will be holding their regular U18s Blue Light roller skating night at the Nanango Skating Rink in George Street, Nanango from 6:00pm to 8:00pm this evening. South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Pantry will be open from 8:30am to 12:30pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items). World Day Of Prayer
Today is the annual World Day of Prayer - an international, inter-denominational, inter-racial prayer movement held on the first Friday in March every year. This year's service has been written by the Christian women of Slovenia. Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. Yarraman Horse Ride
The Yarraman Horse Ride Committee will be holding their 23rd annual Yarraman Horse Ride today - a 25km trail ride around neighbouring properties. The ride will leave the Yarraman Showgrounds on the New England Highway west of town at 8:00am following a compulsory briefing at 7:30am. The cost of the ride is $20 for TRA members or $35 for non-members, which includes cold water throughout the day (lunch can be purchased in the morning before the ride), $25 for children 14 and under or $100 for a family of four. Free camping will be available at the Showgrounds on Friday and Saturday nights, and meals will be available for purchase from Friday night through to Sunday morning. There'll be a bar and DJ running from around 6:00pm tonight after the ride concludes, and non-horse riders are very welcome to attend for free (but no BYO is allowed). More details? Murgon Show Society Country Cabaret
The Murgon Show Society will be holding a Country Cabaret at Murgon Town Hall in Gore Street, Murgon from 6:30pm until late tonight as a curtain-raiser for this year's annual Murgon Show on March 15-16. In addition to the announcement of 2019's Miss Show Girl, Rural Ambassador and Junior Show Girl, veteran entertainer Tony Wagner from Dayboro will be providing the music. There'll also be novelty prizes throughout the night, a multidraw raffle, lucky door and lucky spot prizes, along with a great meal. Tickets are $15 per person or $50 per family and they can be obtained in advance from the Murgon Post Office in Lamb Street, or Maroske's Tyre Service on the Bunya Highway. A dance will be held at Inverlaw Hall on the Burrandowan Road (roughly 20km from Kingaroy) from 8:00pm until late this evening. Bell Show And Rodeo
The annual Bell Show and Rodeo will be held this weekend at the Bell Showgrounds in Wallace Street, Bell. In addition to the usual range of agricultural events, this year's show will feature a classic car and motorcycle rally; a ute, car and bike muster; home brew judging; and on Sunday, an NRA-affiliated rodeo that will kick off at 9:00am and run all day. Watercolor Workshops - Kingaroy and Wondai
Two different watercolour workshops will be held in the South Burnett this weekend, both led by expert watercolour artists. In Kingaroy, the Kingaroy Arts Team will be holding a two-day workshop at the 1913 Council Chambers behind the Kingaroy Visitor Information Centre in Haly Street led by acclaimed North Burnett artist Sue Lederhose between 8:30am and 5:30pm both days. Saturday Cricket
Fans of A-grade cricket can put their feet up today along with Murgon's victorious cricketers, who'll be watching with interest as two Gympie teams battle it out in that faraway town to see who'll face our local superheroes in the Grand Final next week. But in B Grade, Services will play Nanango at Taabinga State School in Kingaroy Street, Kingaroy; Murgon will play Wondai at the Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon; the Warriors will play Blackbutt at Kingaroy State High School; and Cherbourg will test themselves against the mighty Kumbia Rattlers at Murgon State High School. All games start at 12:30pm and spectators are very welcome.

Toowoomba Martial Arts Tournament - Nanango
A Toowoomba Martial Arts Tournament will be held at 4 Railway Lane in Nanango (just next to the swimming pool) from 8:00am to around 3:00pm today. This will be a 3-star, all styles ISKA competition qualifying for the State Titles in September, and spectators are welcome.

BVRT Mountain Bike Ride
A BVRT Mountain Bike Ride between Yarraman and Moore will be held from 8:30am to around 1:30pm today. The ride will depart the Yarraman trailhead at the end of Millar Street early in the morning and follow the route through Blackbutt and Linville to Moore - a distance of about 55km - after which a shuttle bus will return participants and their bikes to Yarraman. Tickets are $35 per person and all riders are welcome.

Country Music Friends - Yarraman

Clean Up Australia Day
Today is national Clean Up Australia Day, and there'll be several activities around the South Burnett this morning to mark it:
 

  • Blackbutt: The Blackbutt-Benarkin Lions Club will be hosting a Clean Up Australia Day activity at Les Muller Park at the corner of Coulson and Hart Streets, Blackbutt from 9:00am this morning, followed by a free sausage sizzle. Everyone is welcome!
     
  • Nanango: The Nanango Scouts and Cubs will be meeting up at their Den at 7:00am before heading off to Butter Factory Park in Drayton Street for a clean-up. Everyone is welcome to join them.
     
  • Kingaroy: Volunteers will meet at shade shelter near the duck pond at the Senior Citizens Park in Pound Street, Kingaroy at 8:00am.
     
  • Wondai: POSTPONED - South Burnett Mountain Bike Club members will meet at the car park on the Wondai-Charlestown Road to clean up in and around McEuen State Forest between 6:30am and 10:00am. Everyone who'd like to take part is welcome. Note: This event has been postponed to May due to a large number of club members having unavoidable commitments.

Women In Ag Day - Durong
BIEDO will be hosting a Women In Ag Day at Durong Hall on the Wondai-Chinchilla Rad at Durong from 9:00am to 3:00pm today. The event will feature talks by women who are involved in different agricultural enterprises as well as trade stands. 96th Annual Murgon Show
The gates will open at the Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon at 7:00am this morning for the main day of the 96th Annual Murgon Show. This year's Show will feature a very big range of cattle and horse events and things will move into full gear early on with judging for dairy and stud beef cattle, followed by poultry judging. There'll also be horse events for hacks and show jumping and a Stockman's Challenge in the main arena; a bumper Sideshow Alley; pavilion and trade exhibits (open from 9:00am); and all the fun of a great Aussie fair. Proston Golden Spurs Campdraft
The first day of the three day Proston Golden Spurs Campdraft will kick off at the Proston Showgrounds on the Proston-Boondooma Road about a kilometre west of Proston at 10:00am this morning with a Charity Maiden draft. This will be followed by a Reserve Open, and then the finals of the Reserve Open in the late afternoon. The Golden Spurs will continue tomorrow with the first round of the Novice, three children's events and the finals of Friday's Charity Maiden before concluding on Sunday with the first round of the Open; the finals of the Novice; the second round of the Open; and then the Open Finals. The Spurs is always a big event and spectators are welcome to come and watch the action for free. There'll also be limited refreshments in the grounds.

The South Burnett's 2019 football season will get underway today, with Women's Division and 1st Division games in Kingaroy and Wondai (planned 2nd Division games won't be held today due to player shortages). In Kingaroy, home teams Wests and Gunners will test their mettle at Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street, with the Women's Division playing at 3:15pm, followed by 1st Division at 5:00pm. And in Wondai, the Barambah Bears will play arch rivals Nanango Panthers at the Wondai soccer fields off the highway just north of the Wondai Sportsgrounds, with Women's Division taking to the park at 2:00pm, followed by 1st Division at 3:30pm. The second day of the three day Proston Golden Spurs Campdraft will kick off at the Proston Showgrounds on the Proston-Boondooma Road about a kilometre west of Proston early this morning with the first round of the Novice draft, three children's events and the finals of Friday's Charity Maiden, before concluding on Sunday with the first round of the Open; the finals of the Novice; the second round of the Open; and then the Open finals. Greek Festival - Nanango
Nanango RSL will be celebrating all things Greek from noon to around 7:30pm today with the South Burnett's first-ever Greek Festival. 79th Annual Goomeri Show
The 79th annual Goomeri Show will be held at the Goomeri Showgrounds on the Burnett Highway at Goomeri from 6:00am this morning until late tonight. This year's Show will feature a big range of equestrian events (from 8:00am); cattle judging (from 8:30am); stud and prime beef, led steer and heifer competitions in the main ring (judging starts at 11:00am); and pavilion entries across eight different categories. The Show's Official Opening will occur at 2:00pm and there'll also be a Pet Parade (at 3:00pm); free face painting for children (3:30pm to 7:30pm); and a big Bendigo Bank Fireworks display at 8:00pm. Guests can also enjoy a Sideshow Alley with fun amusements; a Stockman's Challenge; and Eljay's Freestyle Motorcycle and Bicycle Stunt Show, which will be giving three nail-biting performances at 2:15pm, 4:15pm and 7:00pm. The Show Society's bar will be operating all day and into the night as well, and there'll be plenty of food stalls in the grounds including the famous Goomeri Lions Chip Van. B-Grade Cricket Grand Final
POSTPONED The South Burnett's 2018-19 cricket season will draw to a close today with the B-Grade Grand Final between the Nanango Scorpions and Blackbutt's Timbertowners, which will be played at the Blackbutt Sports Field at 12:30pm. The Timbertowners have only suffered three losses this season, but one was against the Scorpions so today's match promises to be a very interesting game indeed. The Grand Final will be preceded at 11:30am with the region's A and B Grade presentations, and spectators are very welcome to both events.

Saturday Rugby League - Cherbourg and Nanango
The second round of the South Burnett's 2019 rugby league season will be played in Cherbourg and Nanango today. In Cherbourg, Cherbourg will play Wondai in U6/U8s at 9:00am; U78/U9s at 10:00am; U10s at 11:00am; and U12s at noon. This will be followed by an A-grade clash between the Wondai Wolves and Kingaroy Red Ants at 1:00pm; and then a second A-grade clash between the Cherbourg Hornets and Murgon Mustangs at 3:00pm. In Nanango, it will be an all-junior day with Nanango playing Kingaroy in U7/U9s at 8:00am; Nanango playing Murgon in U6s/U8s at 8:30am; Kingaroy playing Murgon in U7/U9s at 9:00am; Nanango playing Murgon U6/U8s at 10:00am; Nanango playing Murgon in U7/U9s at 10:30am; U11s at 11:30am; and U10s at noon. Watercolour Workshop - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery will be hosting the first day of a weekend-long Watercolour Workshop tutored by well-known North Burnett watercolourist Sue Lederhose from 8:30am today (and also tomorrow). Workshop participants can expect to complete four major paintings and several small thumbnails, covering different subjects and using both rough and hot presses surfaces, over the course of the weekend. They'll also learn some basic drawing and composition principles, all in a relaxed and fun learning environment. The cost of the course is $150 and places are limited. The fourth annual Power Up Car Show & Shine And Swap Meet will be held at the Nanango Sporting Fields in Burnett Street, Nanango from 9:30am to around 1:00pm today. This gold coin donation entry family friendly event is a fundraiser for the Nanango Sporting Association, and all pre-1988 vehicles and motorbikes from veteran to modern are very welcome to take part.
